    Joseph, son of William Couch "of the County of Cornwall", was apprenticed for seven years to the shipwright John Bray 30 Mar. 1662. He sold land to John Bray, late of Plymouth, Devon, shipwright, in 1668 (4) and bought 2 acres of marsh in 1678 adjoining that of Christopher Mitchell for less than the seller had paid for it.

    Joseph was part of the inquest into the drowning of Stephen Reed 7 June 1679.(3)

    Joseph signed the petition of the landowners at Brave Boate Harbor against surveying and granting their lands to Walter Barefoote, 15 Aug. 1688.(2) Joseph had land grants in Kittery in 1694, 1701 and was granted 50 acres in 1703.(2)

    Joseph was on the jury in 1707, 1710 and on the grand jury in 1708. He was a selectman of Kittery in 1706 and 1707.

    "Pursuant to an Order or precept to us the Subscribers From the Honble John Wheelwright Esqr Judge of probates Dated the Twenty first Day of July Anno Domini 1729. Wee have made a Division of the Real Estates of Joseph Couch late of Kittery Deceased as Followeth Imprimis-

    1stly To William Couch the administrator for his Accot allowed by the Judge and his own parts and his Two sisters which he has purchased in the whole Estates fifty seven acres Twenty Acres thereof being at a place where Nathll Hix now Dwells and seven acres more at Richard Mitchels and the remainder being Thirty Acres & Lyes near brave boat Harbour and Lyes bounded by Coll Pepperells Land and was laid out by Mr. William Godsoe June 25th 1701 as may appear by his returne- Wee also order to the sd William Couch all the Comon rights which was allowed to his Father as appears by the proprietrs Records-

    2dly To James Spinney his wife Two Two shears Twenty three acres of woodland Eight acres and Seventy one pole thereof Lying Between Coll Pepperrells land and the Town Comons & the other part of said Twenty three acres Lyes near the widow Mitchels at Brave boat Harbour and the whole Twenty three acres was laid out by John Gowen May the Seventeenth 1703 as by his returne-

    3dly And also to said Spinney nine acres more of land being part of the Eighteen Acre Lots lying between Francis Deeds and the widow Racklifs land & is in bredth by the road west & by north from Rackliefs land fourteen poles then north & by East to the head of said Lot-

    4thly To Joseph Couch son of Roger Couch�s Deceased four acres & halfe lying on the West side of said Spinneys nine acres lot and is in bredth by the road Seven pole and so goes back North & by East to the head of said Lott.-

    5thly To Thomas Allen as he is a Guardian to his son four Acres & halfe of this said Lot and lyes on the West side thereof between Decds and said Joseph Couches which is the remainder of the said Lott-

    6thly To Joseph Couch Eleven acres and halfe of the woodland Ten Acres thereof lying at the head of Lockwoods laid out by Mr. William Godsoe June 25th 1701 and one acre and halfe more being part of thirty three acres Laid out by said Godsoe at the same time by Coll Pepperrells land-

    7thly And also to Thomas Allen for his son Eleven acres of woodland & halfe Ten acres thereof laid Out July the Eighth 1701 by Lockwoods land & one acres and halfe being part of the thrity three acres before mentioned-

    8thly To William Couch two Acres and forty foure poles of the Salt marsh at Brave boat Harbour-

    9thly To James Spinney one acre and Twenty two pole of the said salt marsh-

    10thly To Thomas Allen for his son before mentioned halfe an acre and Eleven poles of said marsh-

    These may Certify the Honble Judge of probates in the County of York in New England that I Rebecca Daggot now Resident in Sutton the Daughter of Author Wormstall of Bedford formerly But now Deceast and whereas the right of administr belongs to me to Seize upon my Deceased Fathers Estate according to the Laws of this province and for and in Consideration of the natural affection that I have to my son Samuel Daggot of Sutton in the County of Suffolk I Desire he sd Hon to grand to my said son Samll Daggot a Letter of Administration to administer upon my Deceased Fathers Estate and in Wittness hereof I have Set my hand & Seal this Tenth day of May Anno Domini 1728

    To Messrs John Thompson Richard Gowell Junr Withers Berry Richard Rue and John Moore all of Kittery in sd County of york Greetings

    Whereas William Couch of Newbury in ye County of Essex within ye Province of ye Massachusetts Bay shipwright administrator of all and Singular ye Goods Chattels Rights and Creidts of his Father Joseph Couch Late of said Kittery in ye sd County of york Deceased having issued and made up his accots of administration and these being application made to ye sd judge of probate that there be a Division made of said Estates according to Law

    These are therefore to appoint authorize and Impower you to make a just and Equal Division of sd Estates both Real and Personal according to Law (that is to say) you are to Divide ye whole Estate Equally to and amongst his Children or such as shall Legally Represent them If any of them be Decd Except ye surviving Issue of ye Eldest son who you are to order a Duble Portion of ye whole and you are to make Return of this Recept with your doings under your hands into ye Probate office of ye sd County of york at or before ye first Munday in october next Ensuing in order to make Oath thereunto Given under my hand and Seal of ye Court of Probate hereto ( ) not dated at Kittery ye twenty first Day of July Anno Domini 1729
