    Abbey at Bury St. Edmunds

    Thomas Edon, gent. was a witness to a deed 4 Apr. 1471 from William Brace, fuller of Bury to William Berywey, fuller, Richard Burbage, clerk, John Mey Sr., weaver, Reginald Charderow, weaver and William Symond weaver, all of Bury to a messuage in Bury in the Heyestrete.(4)

    From the Chancery records c.1480, is a suit by John Croftys against Thomas Edon, and Hugh Babyngton and his wife Margaret (previously the wife of John Morley), who purchased a messuage from Thomas in Bury St. Edmunds.(2)

    William Thweyt of Bury St Edmunds, gent.,Thomas Edon, gent., William Mathew, clerk, Ralph Otlee, and John Seriaunt, chandler, sold to Robert Bret of Bury St Edmunds, mercer and wife Joan, John Aleyn, gent., William Stevenson, gent., Thomas Edon jun., William Leier, and John Gowty, barker, a messuage and garden in town of Bury St Edmunds, said messuage lying in the great market place of Bury, between the tenement of John Reve on the south and the tenement of Robert Hogon on the north, abutting on the west on the defensive wall of the town and on the east by the highway of said street, and said garden lying in the western suburb of town, between the garden of Joan Bret, widow on the south and the garden of the hospital of St John called Meisoundieu on the north, abutting on the west on the abbey of Bury St. Edmunds and on the east on the common way leading from Rysbygate to Spyntellmellegapp which the sellers lately had jointly, together with other messuages and tenements, with Eleanor Kyng now deceased, by gift and feoffment of John Salman of Bury, mercer, as appears by charter dated 2 Jun. 1 Ric.III [1484], to hold of chief lords of fee for accustomed services. Witnesses: Thomas Heigham, esq. and William Helperby, bailiffs of Bury, William Baret, gent., John Reygate, Robert Hogon, Robert Turnour, John Berdewell, Robert Ector and others.     The Great Fire of 1608 when the old market hall burned

    On 22 Sept. 1488 Thomas was a witness to a deed from John Sygo, clerk, Edwarm Andrew and Thomas Lacy, grocer to John Howlot, fuller and his wife Alice, Richard Purdy, chaplain of Thurston, John Howlot Sr., Nicholas Tylney and Richard Ormysby to a tenement in the Heystrete in Bury.(3)

    Thomas, along with many others, was the recipient of property in the will of Margaret Odeham, widow of John Odeham of Bury St. Edmund, 12 Jan. 1492/3.(1)

    From the records of the Court of Chancery pleadings to William Warham, Archbishop of Canterbury as Lord Chancellor is a suit of John Porter and Joan, his wife, daughter and heir of John Plumbe, of Thaxted and Margaret, his wife against Thomas Edon of Bury St. Edmunds, gent., brother-in-law of the said Margaret concerning lands promised to the said John Plumbe in lieu of moieties of the manors of Barningham Hall and Nether Hall in Barningham called "Seyntclerys" which he was compelled to surrender by false imprisonement at Bury. The document dates from 1504 to 1515.(1)

    On 26 Nov. 1513 Martin Dullyngham, clerk, William Freman alias Frere and Richard Gotche granted to Thomas Lucas, esq., William Bokenham, clerk, John St. John, kt., Thomas Edon, Richard Kyng and John Hervy of Troston all right in all messuages, lands, tenements, rents and services in Flempton and Lackford which were lately of Edmund Dunwiche and which Roger Dunwiche, his son and heir, inherited on his death, the said lands being held by the above grantors of the grant of the said Roger as appears in a charter of 31 July 1511.(2)
