Daniel was given £30 in his uncle John's will of 1638. John also gave £50 to the Governor of New England "to be employed for the best benefit of the plantation there as shall be by the said Governor for the time being and the assistance thought fit."(8)

Daniel and his brother Stephen were headrights for land in Virginia for their uncle William Barker, captain of the ship America. Daniel was a surveyor, an innkeeper and a large landed proprietor. He kept a public house with and without a license and at times was in court because of "disturbances" which occured at his establishment. He was in Kittery in 1652 when he signed the submission to Massachusetts.

Oath of Allegience- Page 1, Page 2, Petition to the General Court, Page 2

He received his lot by a town grant in 1654(1) and was a constable of Kittery 10 Dec. 1662, a Sergeant in 1659 and a grandjuryman in 1659 and 1678. On 14 July 1683 he gave his sons Thomas and James a tract of land in Berwick where he was living and on 19 March 1696/7 he deeded land to his sons William and Moses and on 21 Aug. 1701 to his son Daniel.

He was a selectman 13 Apr. 1697(3) and signed a Berwick petition ( Page 2)4 Sept. 1697(4), a petition to the general court of Boston 10 Dec. 1662 for aid in discharging the duties of his office in the face of local opposition to that government(5), and a petition to Oliver Cromwell in 1657. He was also one of the founders of the church in South Berwick in 1702. In Dec. 1711 he deeded the homestead to his son Thomas for support.(6)

Daniel's second wife was Mrs. Sarah Sanders who was the widow of Peter Turbet. After Turbet's death in 1661 Sarah was courted by Robert Elliott. This courtship was entered into with so much fervency that the marriage was considered certain. Elliott as the future husband of the widow was appointed administrator of Turbet's estate. From the court records of July 1672: "whereas former administration was granted Robert Eliot on Peter Turbets estate deceased in relation to his marrying the said Turbets widow, which he did not do, the said administration is null: and the court from the desire of the said Turbets widow grants administration to his son John."

Goodwin in his genealogy states that Thomas was probably the son of Daniel of Kittery although his evidence is lacking. The more recent genealogy by the Goodwin Family Association states that he was the son of James of Berwick. It seems much more likely that he was connected with the Newbury Goodwins as he and Hannah Wells were married there. There is also a question as to the parentage of Samuel & Mary Goodwin of Wells. They are placed as children of Thomas & Hannah as they were the only Goodwins who were living in Wells who could possibly be their parents however the following deed puts this relationship in doubt unless Samuel was born after 1744: "I John Wells of Wells... In Consideration of the Love I bear to Thomas Goodwin Junr A minor my grand Son the only Son of my Belovd Daughter Hannah Goodwin wife of Thomas Goodwin of said Wells, Last maker Have given... Twenty Acres of Land... in Wells... upon the northerly side of Little River... Twenty Seventh Day of Janry Anno Domini 1743/4"(1)

Adm. 26 Mar. 1714

Thomas and his family were living in Mr. Love's house when Salmon Falls was sacked by the Indians in March 1689/90. He, his wife Mehitable and their infant son were captured. Mehitable's brother James who was also captured wrote that Thomas had killed one Frenchman and wounded another in the attack and was to be tried for his life by a council of war, however he was free before his wife was released in Oct. 1695. Mehitable had a cruel captor who was disturbed by the wailing of her young baby. To quiet the child she would sit for hours in the snow far from the fire, but the Indian, impatient of her slow progress, snatched it from her arms and killed it.

Three years later, at Montreal, on Monday, 11 May, 1693, there was solemnly baptized an English woman, called in her own country, Mehetabel and by the French, who captured her in war 18 March 1690, Esther, who, born at Barwic, in New England 30 April (old style or 19 May new style) 1670, of the marriage of Roger Pleisted, Protestant, and of Olive Colman, of the same religion, and married to Thomas Gouden, also Protestant, living since nearly three years in the service of Mademoiselle de Nauguiere. She was named Marie Esther.(1) "Hitobl Goodin" was one of those redeemed in Oct 1695 by Mathew Cary.

Thomas signed a Berwick petition for a separate township 4 Sept. 1697 and a petition asking for assistance to support the minister 3 Apr. 1698.(2)
