Sir Clement Heigham's Coat of Arms- Lincoln's Inn, London

Sir Clement Heigham was brought up to the bar, and entered of Lincoln's Inn. He was twice reader of that society, and rose to the degree of Chief Baron of the Exchequer. Early in his professional career, the Monastery of St. Edmundsbury, in reward for his services, appointed him chief bailiff of the Liberty of St. Edmund. Upon the accession of Queen Mary to the throne, Sir Clement joined the Royal standard at Kenninghall, in obedience to her Majesty's letters, addresssed to him, among other leading men of the county of Suffolk. The Queen appointed him one of her privy council, and had him chosen Speaker of the House of Commons, on the meeting of her third parliament, when the reunion was effected of the Church of England with that of Rome. Sir Clement sat in parliament during this reign, successively for Rye, Ipswich, West Looe, and Lancaster. (1)

Clement purchased the Manor of Barrow in 1540 and lived there until his death. The manor remained in the family until 1688 when it was sold.(2)

All Saints- Barrow

Berefte of woldlye lyfe, in hope to ryse to endlesse light
By Christe' deserte', here rest' the corpse of Clement Heighm Knight:
Whom Suffolke soile ded breede bringe up, and cheifly foster ay,
In Barrow, wher his dewllinge was untill hi dyinge day:
Which was the month of March, since God a mortall man became,
The thousandth, & fyve hundreth yeare, wth seventye to the same:
What tyme our Soverance lady deere Elizabeth our Queene,
Of hir most milde & gracius reigne, did recken yeares theirteen.
He was a man, whom God had given, great pregnancye of witte,
And therwith all such utterance, as for the same was fitte.
The feare of God he always had, fast fyxt in hold hearte:
And from his prince in loyaltye, noe iote would he departe.
A faithfull frind to all good men, in word, and eke in deede:
And like a parent to the pore, wth almose at their neede.
His study and profession were, the lawes of this our lande:
The ground wherof he deemded was, right well to understand.
And for his proof of learned skill, by Study gotte theryn:
In howse of Courte cald Lyncolns Inne, wise reader he had been.
By this his knowledge in those lawes, he ded still peace p'serve
When quarrels caused his neyghbors ofte, from unitye to swerve.
His country may full well bewaile, the losse of such a guyde
Who ready was as rightfull judge, their strife for to decyde.
He duely ded correcte all vice, and favourd vertue myld.
And in his judgement would not be, with bryberye defyled.
In punishement unto the pore, which ded their cryme lament,
He wold with pyty mercyfull, from rigour soone relent.
But unto them which wilfully, contynude in offence,
A terror unto them he was, in Justice true defence
Through which good gift' soe manifest such favour he obtenid
Wth Phillpe and with Mary late, our Soveragnes when they reignd
That he by sage and good advice, was chosen for to bee
The Speaker of the Parlament, and furthred to degree,
To be of pryvy counsayle with his prince, and afterward,
The lord cheif Baron of the Queenes Escheker was preferd.
The wch advaincement ended by Queene Maries death: and hee
Retorninge unto private state, contynude in degree
Of worshippe in his country still, as Justicer of Peace:
And from his vertues here reherst, till death he ded not cease.
Wch then from care disthardoinge him, & of ech worldly thinge,
Was unto him a directe meane, his lastinge life to bringe.
Then, (as he usde always much time in prayer for to spend)
Even soe with prayer at the last, his earthly life ded end.
God grant that this (a true Record) of him here lefte behind,
May cause ech man remember one, & beare his life in mind.
