Judhel was Lord of Barnstable and Totnes and was listed in the Domesday Book. His wife was the sister of Germond de Picquigny. Judhel retired in 1123 and became a monk at the priory of St. Martin-des-Champs near Barnstable.(1) Judhel had founded the Barnstable Priory as "Joelis filii Aluredi". He founded Totnes Priory during the reign of King William II.(2)
Judhel was expelled from his inheritance by King William II and granted it to Roger de Novant.(3)
The "De Miraculis Sanctae Mariae Laudunensis" states that a "sister of Guermond de Picquigny married in England a rich Lord named Joelle de Totenes".(4)
