Turold, Sheriff of Lincolnshire

Turold of Lincolnshire

1. TUROLD, Sheriff of Lincolnshire

m. ?BEATRIX MALET

It is known that Robert Malet was the uncle of countess Lucy, a substantial heiress who married a series of Lincolnshire magnates. Numerous scholars over the past 100 years have tried to determine her exact relationship with Robert, however, Dr. Keats-Rohan provides a new interpretation of the evidence in favor of Lucy being the daughter of Robert Malet's sister by her marriage to Thoraldr, Sheriff of Lincoln.(2) Lucy's mother's name has not been established, however, Thoraldr, who died in 1079, could have been a first husband of Beatrix or Robert may have had another sister. One must think that Beatrix was her mother as she and Ivo named a daughter Beatrix. There is a Cotton charter dated 1152 which records the grant by Henry II, Duke of Normandy, to Ranulph le Meschin, Earl of Chester of totum honrem de Eia, sicut Robertus Malet avunculus matris sue melius et plenius unquam tenuit. Et feudum Alani de Lincoln ei dedi qui fuit avunculus matris sue.(1)
