The only occurence of the rare name of Rowland Young outside of York is in High or Chipping Wycombe, Buckinghamshire where a Rowland Young was married in 1616 and again in 1618. He could have been the father of Rowland of York, ME.(1) However, Thomas Young of London who was in Maine at an early date and whose father-in-law had the name of Rowland may have been Rowland Young's father. At this point Roland's ancestry remains unproven.

Since Rowland was a minor at the time of his arrival he was probably an apprentice when he came. He was in York in 1629, but Rowland Young, fisherman of York declared in 1686 that he had lived in York fifty years (since 1636) thus making him one of the first settlers in the town. Rowland first fished at the Isles of Shoals before he acquired land on the creek in York.(2)

Rowland was on the jury in 1650 and 1655.(3) He took the Oath of Allegiance to Massachusetts 22 Nov. 1652.(4) Rowland was evidently not satisfied with the Massachusetts government as he did not sign the petition to Cromwell which referred to the complaints presented to the Protector by "some gentlemen of Worth" (ie. Godfrey) for restitution of their right of jurisdiction and asked that they be not heeded, intimating that they were instigated by "professed Royalists whose breathings that way... have been so farre stifled."(5)

Rowland had a town grant in 1653 at Bass Cove which he sold to Daniel Dill.(6)

"I Rowland Young of York ffisherman with the free consent of my wife Joane doe in Consideration of ye Sum of Nine pounds... paid by Capt John Davis... doe... Sell... unto Daniel Dill... ten Acres... being between Bass Cove and John Chirmihills land, bounded with John Alcocks Lott... and Richard Banks... by ye River Side... According to town grant whereby ye sd land was given me bearing July the 3d 1653... this 4th Day of Decembr 1666... Rowland X Young... in ye presents of Edw Rishworth, John Twisden, Daniel Livingstoun."(18)

Rowland's home was in Godfrey's first division of the grand patent extending northeast from Meeting House Creek.(7)

Rowland was fined for travelling to Kittery on a Sunday in 1666 and for drunkenness in 1678.(8) Rowland was one of those who signed Peter Weare's letters to help him get out of jail in 1668.(9)

Peter Weare's "Get Out of Jail Free" letter

On 12 April 1677 his house was burned by the Indians on Ferry Neck.(10) The following year he was on the grand jury.(11)

Rowland signed a petition against the sale of Maine 28 March 1679(12) and signed the petition to the King in 1680 praying that they might be restored to his immediate authority as a Royal Province(13), but to no avail and the Massachusetts authorities declared themselves: "the now Lord Proprietors of the Province of Mayne".

    Petition to the King

Rowland and his wife deeded the Knight land to son Robert in 1680, 10 acres to son Samuel on 18 Apr. 1682 and the Knight homestead to son Rowland Jr. 25 Aug. 1685. He willed the remainder to his wife Joan in 1685.(14)

Susanna was a witness against Roger Kelly in 1684.(2)

As the war with the French and the Indians continued the settlers dared to venture out in small work parties accompanied by a larger number who stood guard while the others worked. In April 1692 while fishing outside of Boon Island Rowland was chased and captured by French privateers while others in another boat escaped. These incidents became common and an embargo on the use of all boats was ordered while a fleet was sent out from Massachusetts to pursue the privateers.(3) Rowland was returned from Canada in 1695 by Capt. Matthew Carey(4) but a Rowland was on the grand jury in 693/4.(5) Perhaps the person captured was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth?(6) Rowland was a selectman in 1695.(7)

    11II. JOSEPH (JOHN 1, THOMAS 2, JOHN 3, JOHN 4, RICHARD 5, RICHARD 6, GREGORY 7, THOMAS 8, ROWLAND 9, ROWLAND 10)

    b.c.1672
    m. ABIGAIL (4) DONNELL
    d. 1734

Joseph lived in the vicinity of Rice's Bridge in York as did the Bradburys.(1) In 1709 he was a selectman and was instructed by the town to hire a schoolmaster.(2) Joseph is easily confused with his cousin, another Joseph Young, who is usually referred to as Joseph Jr., meaning he was the younger of the two men. Joseph Jr. was the son of Roland Jr's brother Robert. Our Joseph was referred to as Joseph Sr. or as just Joseph Young (although I have seen Joseph Jr. referred to as just Joseph).

"Att a Legall Town Meeting Holden in York March ye 23th 1712/23 Granted to Joseph Young ser thirty acres of Land if he Can find it Clear of all former Grants..."(9)

"Joseph Young Ser of York... Yeoman for and In consideration of three Pounds... Paid by Abram Preble of Said York Yeoman... doe... Sell... thirty acres of land where he can find it Within this Township... the which said thirty acres of land was Granted unto the said Joseph Young at a Leagall Town Meeting in Said York March ye 23 : 1712/13... this fourth day of December : 1721... Joseph Young... In Presents of us John Woodbridg, John Chesebrough".(11)

I Joseph Young of York... Yeoman... Do... Sell... unto John Sayward of Said York Yeoman... All My whole wright... that I Now have... unto the above Granted thirty acres of Land... this Ninth day of febuary... 1721/2- Joseph Young... In the Presents of Us Isaac Provender, Edward Preble".(9)

Looks like one of the above transactions must have been a mortgage.

"Joseph Young for and in Consideration of a Certaine Sum of Money to him in hand Paid by Elihu Parsons of Said York Yeoman... doe... Sell... fifteen acres of Land where he Can find it Cleer of all former Grants Within this Township of Sd York the Which is Part of a Grant of thirty acres of Land Granted to Said Joseph Young at a Town Meeting in Said York Octor ye 16th 1696... this Eight day of decemr 1721 : Joseph Young... In the Presents of Us- John Woodbridg, John Chesebrough".(8)

"Leiut Joseph Young of York... Yeoman... In Consideration of seven Pounds... paid by his Brother Benaiah : Young of sd York Labourer... do... sell... one acres & a halfe of fresh marsh or meadow ground... scituated upon ye north side of sd York River upon ye north side of sd Benaiah Youngs land & upon ye southwest side of abovesd Joseph Youngs land Lately give him by his Father Mr Roland Young Late of sd York Deceased... this Eighteenth day of Februwary... one Thousand Seven hundred & Twenty two/3... Joseph Young... in ye Presence of us- Henry Simpson, Abram Preble".(12)

As we can see Joseph was a Lieutenant in the militia by 1723.(3) He was one of the signers of the petition to Col. T. Westbrook 20 Apr. 1724:

"Hond Sir- There is a house Lately made defenceable near ye head of York river built by Mr Robert Cutt and some few Inhabitants reside there the keeping of which house will be a very great Annoyance to ye Enemy and will be a great Security to the greatest part of Kittery, and all the Inhabitants on the south side of York river it being a place where the Indians frequently come in with their Scouts. You being at ye head of the forces doubt not but it is in Your Power- Therefore our humble request is that Six or Eight Soldiers be posted there for the reasons above said."(4)

"Kittery Decemr 21st 1724 This day received of ye within named Joseph Young thirty eight Pounds Province bills which is in full satisfaction of ye foregoing Mortgage and I do... discharge the said Jos : Young... Wm Pepperrell... In Presence of Wm Pepperrell Junr, John Bradbury".(10)

On 30 April 1729 Joseph gave to his son Samuel the land on which his father and grandfather had lived in York:

"I Joseph Young of York... Gent- for & in Consideration of the natural Love & affecton that I have & do bear to my only welbeloved & dutiful Son Samuel Young of York... Coaster have given... a certain Tract... being in the Township of York it being the same Land whereon my honoured Father Rowland Young decd lived & which my Hond Grandfather Rowland Young Decd gave to my sd Father as by a Deed under his Hand & Seal Dated Augt 25. 1685... On 12 April 1734 as administrator of the estate of Samuel Young he sold the land on the York River to Benaijah:

"I Joseph Young of York... Gent Administrator of the Estate of Samuel Young late of said York Deceased by virtue of an Order from the Honble Judges of the Supr Court... did grant unto the said Joseph Young... Seems like a rather round about way of doing things!

"In the Name of God Amen The First Day of May 1734 I Joseph Young of York in the County of York & Province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England Gentleman... Do make and Ordain this my last Will & Testament...
