Author - Marcia Farina

We begin this narrative with some background on the Sammons family.*  Joseph Sammons (1833-1925, also known as Jacob) was born in Morgan County, Illinois, son of Edmund and Ann Mariah (Hays) Sammons, who came to Hancock County, Illinois, about 1845, and in 1855 they moved to Schuyler County, Missouri.  It was in Missouri that Joseph married Sarah Marguerite London (1848-1936), who had lost her first husband, Isaac Newton Wheeler, just six months after they had married.

John William Sammons was Joseph and Sarah's second child, born April 7, 1869, in Schuyler County, Missouri.  Joseph and Sarah moved to Rooks County, Kansas, in the late 1870s.  John later returned to the Illinois.  Efforts to locate the family in the 1880 Federal Census have been unsuccessful.

John married Wilhelmina Gertrude Greenly, daughter of Emanuel B. Greenly and Sarah Winkleman.  Gertie was young - she turned 15 just five days before her wedding day.  She was born in Pennsylvania, perhaps in Point Township, Northumberland County, on December 20, 1876. The Greenly family then moved to Hancock County, Illinois, where Sarah Winkleman Greenly died in 1879.

At some point Gertie and her elder sister, Annie, were taken into the home of George W. Green and his wife, Mary, in Hancock Township.  Although the two sisters were listed with their father in Fountain Green Township in 1880, they were also listed with George and Mary.  It appears that Gertie continued to live in the Green home for the next ten years.

In late 1890 Gertie wanted to get married, but being underage she needed permission, so she wrote to her father, who had moved to Moravia, Appanoose County, Iowa.  Follow the above link to Emanuel and Sarah to read his affectionate response.

John and Gertie were married on December 25, 1890, at Carthage, Hancock County, by William R. Hamilton, Justice of the Peace.  Manville Barb and Jennie Scott were the witnesses.
Marriage Documents

John and Gertie may have lived for a time in Illinois (their first daughter was born there), but their long term residence was in Keokuk, Iowa.  They became the parents of three daughters.  John died in Keokuk in December of 1956.  Gertie died January 15, 1968.  Her last residence was reported as Princeton, Scott County, Iowa.

John and Gertie's daughters were:

i. Carrie M. Sammons, born about 1891 in Illinois.

ii. Della M. Sammons, born about 1894 in Iowa.

iii. Nellie B. Sammons, born about 1895 in Iowa.
