Jary White Son of: Jary White & Lucena Lawrence b: 1809 Mt. Holly, Rutland Co, VT m: 1833 New York d: Oct 20, 1884 Hancock Co, IL (probably) burial: Majorville Cemetery, Hancock Co, IL The Gregg biography mentions that Jary settled on 80 acres in Section 23 of what would be named Fountain Green Township in 1850. Land records show purchases of 160 acres in Section 23. Click on the next link to view a representation of where those acres were located. Land Purchases |
Spouse 1: Laura Eaton Dau. of Frazier & Lucinda Eaton b: abt Jun 11, 1814 NY m: 1833 New York d: May 21, 1860 Fountain Green Twp, Hancock Co, IL burial: Majorville Cemetery, Hancock Co, IL The 1850 Census shows Laura's birthplace was Pennsylvania. All other references indicate she was born in New York. According to the Mortality Schedule accompanying the 1860 Federal Census of Fountain Green Township, Laura died there after suffering for 3 weeks from a tumor in the side. Narratives on Majorville Cemetery indicate that the first burial there occurred in 1862. We tend to believe that is factual and that she was buried at Fountain Green Cemetery. If she was reinterred at Majorville, when would that have been done? Twenty-four years later when Jary died? It's unlikely there would have been much left to move. Whether or not Laura's actual remains were placed at Majorville, her marker is there next to Jary's.

Laura White b: d: burial: |
In the 1880 Gregg history, four of the children of Jary and Laura Eaton White were said to be still living: George, Charles, Laura and Augustus. But this Laura was not in either the 1850 or 1860 Census, and Laura Eaton White died in May of 1860. One possibility is that this "Laura" was actually the Lucinda enumerated in 1850 and 1860.
Adding to the puzzle is that Jary and his second wife also were reported to have a daughter named Laura E., but this second Laura did not appear in any census listings, either.

Jary White Son of: Jary White & Lucena Lawrence b: 1809 Mt. Holly, Rutland Co, VT m: Jul 11, 1861 Hancock Co, IL (probably) d: Oct 20, 1884 Hancock Co, IL (probably) burial: Majorville Cemetery, Hancock Co, IL Marriage License (82k)
According to the 1880 Gregg history, "Mrs. White has 5 children", but then the names of six living children were listed: "Henrietta, James, Noble S., Clara E., Louis L. [Lois L.], now dead, Laura E. and Frances E." Elizabeth was first married to Henry James on December 30, 1857. Marriage license (71k) They had one daughter, Mary Henrietta James. Thanks to Helen Vargas for pointing out what now seems so obvious. If we remove the comma between Henrietta and James in the sentence from the Gregg sketch, the text then fits known history. At present we have no further information on Henry James, but we believe that he died in 1859 and was buried in Friendship Cemetery, McDonough County, Illinois.

Clara Effie White b: abt 1863 Hancock Co, IL m: Nov 6, 1889 Colchester, McDonough Co, IL d: May 16, 1941, Lane Co, OR burial: Spouse: James H. Yetter
Marriage documents (86k, 63k) Witnesses to Clara's and James' marriage were William E. Callihan and Malinda Harding. In turn, William and Malinda were then married by the same minister, with Clara and James as their witnesses. It's interesting to note that two weeks after Clara and James were married, Thomas Eddy White married Amanda Agnes Campbell. Between 1890 and 1894 Clara gave birth to three children in Colorado, and in 1892 Thomas' and Agnes' first daughter was born in Colorado. In 1891 a third White sibling, Frances Emma, was married in Boulder County, Colorado, and her two children were born there in 1892 and 1893. By 1900 Clara and James, Thomas and Agnes, and their young families were located near each other in Adair County, Missouri, and in 1910 they were all living in the same township in Roger Mills County, Oklahoma. Frances Emma had returned to Illinois with her children sometime after the death of her husband in 1894.
|
Also in Adair County in 1900 was the family of Noble and Ella George White. James died in Lane County, Oregon, in 1929. In 1930 Clara was living in Lane County near Thomas and Amanda. In August of 1936 when the Majorville Church congregation held a reunion commemorating the construction of the second church building, Clara was one of many who sent letters. Her location was given as Eugene, Oregon, which is in Lane County. Clara died in 1941. |
