WILLIS CEMETERY HANCOCK COUNTY, ILLINOIS |
MARGARET
WIFE OF A. PARKER |
Author - Marcia Farina |
Abel Parker was born April 16, 1793, in Hampshire County, Virginia, the son of Absalom Parker and Mary Cooper. A brief obituary stated he was the "last of six brothers and as many sisters, four of whom are living, two only able to accompany his remains to their last resting place."
"Able" Parker was counted in Madison Township, Fayette County, Ohio, in the 1830 Federal Census, along with a wife born within the same span of years. On the preceding census page were the households of his father and brother, Nathan. The marriage documents of Sidney Parker, Abel's daughter, provide her mother's maiden name: Gragg. Abel is said to have brought his family to the Hancock County area in the late 1830s. He was not counted as a head of household in the 1840 Federal Census of Hancock County, and he was not listed in the 1842 Nauvoo Tax Index. He died October 5, 1876, and was buried in the Willis Cemetery; no tombstone has been found. The inscription on Margaret's tombstone has faded. We do not know when she died, only that she was not listed in the 1850 Federal Census for Illinois.
