IN MEMORY OF
JAMES K. SHORE
JAN 20, 1838
MAY  3, 1912
AT REST.

James K. Shore was born near Hubblesville, Huntington Co., Penn. Jan. 20th 1838 and died at his home in Hancock Township May 3rd, 1912, being 74 years 3 months and 13 days of age.  He was the oldest of a family of 7 children, Three brothers, Calvin, Eli and Simeon and two sisters, Mrs. Maria Rinehart and Mrs. Miller have preceded him in death; one brother, Jesse L. Shore of White City, Kan., is the only one who remains.

He was united in marriage Feb. 20th 1862 to Sophia F. Kesselring; Six children were born to them; Laura C, who died Jan. 12th, 1882 at 18 years of age, Ervin died May 23rd 1871 aged 8 years, Austin died Sep. 8th 1876 being 5 years old, Clark died Nov. 9th of the same year at 3 years of age, Mrs. Grace G. Broadhead who died May 19th, 1909 at 34 years of age and the youngest Clayton L. who has been his stay through the declining years.

Mr. and Mrs. Shore with their two children came to Carroll Co. Ill., in 1855 and the next Spring came to Hancock Township living for 2 years on his uncle’s place, they then moved to the adjoining farm which has been his home for 43 years.

Like the early settlers they experienced both the hardships and satisfaction that came to those who with their own hands changed the timbered lands into a well-tilled farm and a comfortable home.

He has not been strong for several years but his last sickness was of only a few weeks duration.

In early manhood he gave his heart to Jesus and tried to walk in the path that leads to life everlasting. He and his wife were two of the group of Christians who formed the church at Hillsgrove in the early seventies when regular services were first instituted; he has served his church as a Trustee for a number of years and also as a S. S. Superintendent and when his health would permit was regular in attendance.  He has left to his relatives and friends the richest heritage that any one can leave the sacred memory of a devout Christian.  His last sickness was attended with little suffering and he was visibly happy as he crossed into the Beyond.

Besides a large circle of friends who will miss him there is left one son, Clayton L. Shore, his wife and three grandchildren, Gilbert Shore and Vera and Marie Broadhead.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. B. Green at the residence and interment was made at the family cemetery near Joetta on Sunday May 5.
