As furnished by Bill Hawkins,
Obituary of William Alva Criswell:
The Malvern Leader, IA, 28 Aug 1919: William Alva Criswell: William Alva Criswell was born December 4, 1867, in York County, Pennsylvania and died August 19, 1919, at his home in Omaha. He came with his parents, Wm. and Catherine Criswell from Pennsylvania, to Illinois, in the spring of 1870, moving to Mills County, Iowa, in the fall of the same year, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Mrs. A. G. Coulson, Nov. 29, 1917, at Fremont, Nebr. He leaves besides his widow and son, three brothers and three sisters, Frank Criswell of Tacoma, Washington, John M. of Creighton, Nebr., Clarence Criswell, of Malthill, Nebr., Mrs. B. F. Lamb of Geneva, Nebr., Mrs. Annie Gibson of Wallace, Nebr., Mrs. Amelia Craig of Ewood, Nebr., and a host of friends to mourn his loss. Bill, as he was familiarly known by his friends, had been a very patient sufferer from Diabetes for over a year. When his summons came he went quickly and quietly. He had been a resident of Omaha for about seventeen years. Short funeral services were held at the Malvern Cemetery, where he was buried, conducted by Rev. M. A. Gable, pastor of the M. E. Church. Music was furnished by Misses Lela and Ida Salyers, and Messrs. R. W. Criswell and Fred Stone. The cousins acted as pallbearers. Those from a distance in attendance at the funeral were Frank Van Cleave of Newell, Iowa, Howard Colson and son, Mrs. Confal of Omaha, Bert Criswell and wife of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. Lamb of Geneva, Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gibson of Wallace, Nebraska.
_______________
Cindy, If you are correct in stating that William Patterson Criswell is the Great-Grandfather of Bert Criswell Jr. and Les Criswell, then I believe that Bert Criswell's parents were William Alva Criswell & Sarah E. Godsey who were married 14 Mar 1891 in Iowa. They had a son whom I have been unable to identify. Bert Criswell Sr's 1895 birth date would fit. William and Sarah both died in Nebraska. A Bert Criswell regularly attended Criswell funerals in Malvern IA, but is never identified in the obituaries in terms of his relationship to the family. Bill Hawkins

A BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF FREMONT AND MILLS COUNTIES, IOWA. CHICAGO: Lewis Pub. Co., 1901.
pp. 452-453
"among the prominent citizens and influential men of Mills county, Iowa is James S. Criswell, the subject of this sketch, who is also an honored veteran of the Civil War, Mr. Criswell was born in York county, Pennsylvania in 1837, a son of Robert and Mary (Wise) Criswell, the former of whom passed his whole life in York County, but the latter died in Columbia, Pennsylvania. They reared the following children: Henry, who was a soldier in the Civil War, and is now deceased; Robert F., who lives at Wheeling, West Virginia; William P., who died in Mills county; George B., who was a soldier in the Civil War, dying while in the service; Mrs. Mary A. Brooks, who resides in Kansas; and Margaret J. Lehaman, who resides in Columbia, Pennsylvania.
Our subject and his wife were reared and educated in York county, and were married there December 15, 1864. They came to Mills county, Iowa in 1871, and moved to their present comfortable home in 1873...
The wife of our subject is a lady of education and refinement, who bore the maiden name of Mary J. McKinley, and was a daughter of Stephen and Jennie (Armstrong), who were born and died in the north of Ireland. The paternal grandfather was William McKinley, the great grandfather was David McKinley, who was also the great grandfather of William McKinley, hte president of the United States. The children born to Mr. and Mrs. Criswell were Jennie C., Mrs. Abbie Bellwood, Robert W., Stephen, Mrs. Mattie Sacrett., S. Agnes, Mae L., and Charles P.
In 1861 Mr. Criswell enlisted for army service from York county, Pennsylvania, in Company H, Seventy-sixth Regiment, Keystone Zouaves, under Captain Hamilton and Colonel John M. Powers. The regiment was stationed at Camp Cameron, near Harrisburgh, and from there was sent to Baltimore and then to Fortress Monroe. The next removal was by transport to Port Royal, South Carolina, in December, 1861, and from that time until his discharge, in 1863 on account of disabilities, our subject saw severe and constant service among the islands along the coast of North and South Carolina, taking part in a number of fights and skirmishes.
The discharge of Mr. Criswell was given to him at Botney Bay Island, South Carolina, from which place he was sent for a time to an army hospital, finally reaching his home, which was near that part of the state of Pennsylvania invaded by General Lee's army. While the battle of Gettysburg was in progress the sound of the artillery was plainly heard at his place. Some time after his return Mr. Criswell was sent for to join a military band doing duty for the Veteran Reserve Corps, stationed then at Washington. He is a musician of ability, and while performing this part of a soldier's duty he had the pleasure of attending the ball at the second inauguration of President Lincoln, this being followed by the sad duty of assisting in the funeral dirge at the burial of the martyred president. His band was the one selected for the second post of honor in the procession from the White House to the Capitol. ---"

2005-
I found Lester while working on the family history. He was very generous with what he recalled and very willingly loaned me old family photos so I could make copies. Over the years he would occasionally send me a VHS tape of something he saw on tv about railroad history. To this day I have saved those tapes. Lester was so proud of his work for the railroad. Thank you Lester for all your kindness. You are missed. Cindy Marcell

New story "1943 Men of War"
Word first received in four months - that he had survived thesinking of the cruiser Northampton was received y Mr. and Mrs. BertCriswell, 2353 South Thirty-fifth avenue, form their son, Seaman Bert, Jr.
The family had been in doubt about his safety since January 11. TheCriswells were present at a party when someone casually tuned in theradio just in time to hear a flash that the ship had been sunk. Thatbroke up the party.
Said Criswell in his letter: "I had a couple close calls but got outO.K. I swam around for about two hours. Swallowed a lot of salt waterbut when they picked me up I was all smiles. I do hope I get anothercrack at them."
The ship was the second sunk under Criswell. He was aboard theAstoria.
