THOMAS J. VANDERSLICE, farmer, P. O. Highland, came to Kansas in August, 1853, and located at the Iowa, Sac and Fox Agency, then called the Nemaha Agency. It was located in Doniphan County, after he came to Kansas. He was engaged in merchandising in Iowa Point in 1858. He is a member of the Christian Church and a member of Smithton Lodge No. 1, A. F. & A. M., at Highland, of which lodge he served as Master nine years. He is also a charter member of Royal Arch Chapter of Masons and of Troy Chapter No. 16, and a charter member of the Commandery of Knights Templar, Hiawatha Commandery, at Hiawatha. He was elected a member of the Territorial Legislature and served in that body in 1860, and was again elected to the State Legislature and served in 1868. In the spring of 1873 he was elected Magistrate in Iowa Township, and in the fall was elected Sheriff of the county. He served two years, and was re-elected, serving two terms, and in January, 1878, returned to his farm near Highland. He was born in Scott County, Ky., at the Great Crossings, two miles from Georgetown, the county seat, on the 10th day of November, 1827, and resided in his native State, with the exception of three years absent in Louisiana, until he moved to Kansas. He was married in Franklin County, Ky., June 5, 1851, to Miss Sarah Burchfield, and they lived happily together over twenty-nine years, when she died November 12, 1878. She bore him fifteen children, of whom five are living. Howard, one of his sons, is married and is a grain merchant at White Cloud; Samuel is a clerk in Belleville, this state; John W. is married and living in Hamilton County, Ohio; Maggie, the only daughter, is living with her father; R. M. is the youngest child living. All these children were born in Kansas, excepting Howard, who was born in Kentucky. (sic) in the same home that his father was, being only four months old when he came to Kansas. Howard was appointed station agent on the A. & N. R. R., in 1873, and served that company faithfully for nine years, and then left them to go into the grain and wood business at White Cloud. His son Daniel was the first male child born in this township, as now organized, and the first male child born in the county. He lived to the age of nineteen years, and died in Troy of typhoid malaria, much loved by all of his associates and by everyone that knew him. His mother grieved over his loss until her death, never mentioning his name without shedding tears. The rest died young.

Sarah Jane Burchfield

Transcriptions below provided by Cindy L. Bent Marcell
Is this the aunt referred to as Susan Jones, the one that helped raise Martha Joseph Burchfield once her mother died? Could the handwriting have been poor and it should be Sarah Jane that is referred to in the letter written by Anna Burchfield? See reference below.
*******************************
per Annabelle Wisehart-Lane, "The Pioneering Ancestors"
p. 16 Another communication from Mrs. Anna Burchfield (Mrs. Dan) of Centralia, Mo. (pencilled notation here quoted) "James Birchfield and Elizabeth Ross Birchfield had three boys, John, Bob, and Henry, and some girls. Mother died when Mother Marcell was eleven days old, and father died when she was eleven [?] years old." Another notation, unsigned, differs some what from the foregoing: It says "Grandfather Birchfield died when daughter Martha Joseph was seven years old. He was dragged to death when horses ran away." "Martha Joseph was brought up by here aunt (Susan Jones) in Lexington, Kentucky. Uncle John Burchfield visited them and Uncle Bob, (married Julia Marcell) and she ran out and returned to Kansas with him, living with Uncle Tom Vanderslice. (Old Tom.)

Horace S. Vanderslice

NOTE by Cindy Marcell, there is conflicting birth info on Edward Vanderslice, a child of TJ & SJ Vanderslice.
There are 2 different headstones for these children.
One stone looks to be the original family stone. It reads:
Daniel - d. September 27, 1874; age 19 yr 3 mos 11dys (This would make date of birth June 16, 1855)
Horace S. - d. Sep 10 1852, age 6 mo
Lillie* B. - d. Sep 23 1864; age 3 yr 28 dys
Ann E. - d. Oct 19 1865; age 1 mo 7 dys
Mary A. - d. Mar 1 1873; age 1 yr 4 mo 2 dys
Edward - d. April 12, 1864; age 1 mo 14 dys (This would make date of birth May 26, 1864*)
Fredie - d. July 05, 1875; age 5 mos 9 dys (This would make date of birth 26 Jan 1875)
Franklin - d. Jul 27 1881; age 4 yr 11 mo 20 dys

The second stone lists a birth & death date but for the following children, however Edward's date of birth does NOT match the original stone. This stone says:
Edward - May 25, 1873* - April 12, 1864
Daniel - June 16 1855 - September 27 1874
Frankie - Aug 7 1876 - Jul 27 1881
Tillie* B. - May 25 1864 - Sep 23 1864
Ann E. - Sep 12 1865 - Oct 19 1865
Mary A. - Oct 29 1871 - Mar 1 1873
Freddie - Jan 26 1875 - July 05 1875
Note Horace is not listed on this stone.

There is also a third stone for Lillie & Anne! It is original and may have been purchased after Anne's death in 1865? It reads:
Annne d. Oct 19 1865, age 1 mo 7 dys
Lilly B. d. Sep 23 1864, age 6 mo 28 dys

* Birth certificates did not exist back then & the state was not required to keep records at that time so the headstone is all I have to document their dates of birth & death. Sure makes things confusing when they conflict in information!!! I do not know who purchased the replacement stone but assume since it was later it might have errors as memories often fade over time. I also assumed the original family stone was purchased by the children's parents who would be most likely to know the dates. But crazier things have been discovered while doing family research! Has any other researcher a source that confirms or denies either of these headstones dates to help with this mystery? I think that would be most interesting to see! Cindy Marcell
