James "Bud" Dillon Marcell

Obituary - James D. Marcell, son of J. E. and Mattie Dillon Marcell, was born in Highland, Kansas, Sept. 5, 1901, and passed away at his home at Culbertston, Nebr. Jan. 19, 1953. He died suddenly of a heart attack which first struck at four o'clock in the morning.
James, or Bud as he was more familiarly known, was a brilliant student whose keen mind stood out in any company. His warm friendliness, his poise and sharp intellect marked him in the classroom whether as a student or teacher.
He finished Highland's three schools and won his Bachelor's degree from Oklahoma U. and his Master's degree from Colorado Univ. He had done work on his Doctor's degree.
His teaching began at Union, Nebr, where he was head of their school system for 12 years. For the next 13 years he was head of a large consolidated school at Springerville, Ariz. His health failed and he was out of the profession for a time, but at the time of his death he was principal of the high school at Culbertson, Nebr. They had planned for him to continue there next year.
James was married to Miss Margaret Dowell of Hamlin on June 12, 1927. They had no children.
He was a member of the Christian church of Highland, and of the Masonic Lodge of Netawaka, Nebr.
Surviving, besides his widow, are two sisters both of Highland; Mrs. C D Wolfley (Florence) and Mrs., Paul Guthrie (Eliose).
The body was brought to Highland and services were held from the Noll Chapel Thursday. The Rev. Louis Dale of the Presbyterian Church was in charge. The music consisted of a duet by Mrs. Paul Bottiger and Mrs. Max Moore and a solo by Mr. Ralph Pettis. Miss Caroleen Gilmore was the accompanist.
The body bearers were Raymond Doane, Paul Bottiger, Lowell Kelle, Forrest Hagenbuch, Dallas Blevins and Harry Whitaker.
