Darius was a Union soldier in the Civil War serving as a private in Company I of
the 23rd Indiana Infantry, enlisting in Charlestown, IN (Clark County) on July
27, 1861 and mustering out on July 23, 1865 in Louisville, KY.
He claimed to be a Charlestown, IN
resident at the time of his enlistment.
During most of his married life, he resided in Clermont, IN where his
five children were born. Nancy was
the daughter of Benjamin Fewel Lewis (b. c1813 NC) and Mary (b. c1807 VA),
possibly Mary Ashby. Several of
Darius’ and Nancy’s children are buried in Floral Park Cemetery, Indianapolis.
The ancestors of one of Darius’ CW acquaintainces, Joshua E. Dill (who
lived near Darius in Clermont, IN for several years), were pre-1800 residents of
Caroline and Queen Anne’s Counties (bordering Talbot Co.) in Maryland on the
