Husband's General Notes
Per Laidley, family history says that he was a Hessian soldier who was brought to the colonies by the British to fight against the Americans in the Revolutionary War. Also states that this is not true, the family was Swiss German who settled in the Shenandoah Valley in 1739.

General Notes for Child David C. Ruffner
from West Virginia Newspapers Obituaries 1822-1899 Vol.1, pg 70:
The Kanawha Republican
February 11, 1843
Died at Kanawha Salines Wednesday evening the 1st inst., Col. David Ruffner, aged 76 years. Col. Ruffner immigrated to this county from Shenandoah in 1797. Within a few months he was reappointed a magistrate, an
office he had held in Shenandoah for some years previous to his removal. He continued in the active discharge of the duties of that office for a period of nearly 47 years. Up to the time of his death probably no man had more completely realized the conception of those who framed our county court system, than he.
He was elected by his fellow citizens to a seat in the Legislature, within less than a year after his first arrival in the county, and at various sessions of the Legislature in after years he was a member of that body.
