On 18 December 1903, Walter Thaxton shot and killed a man by the name of Will Price. The reason given was that Will Price showing affection toward Walter's wife, Emma. All charges were dropped because of the lack of evidence.
According to the 1880 census under father James David Thaxton, his age was reported as eight with Joseph, his brother, age seven.

Passed away at his residence in Kanawha County, Poca District, on Tuesday March 14th, 1882, James, son of Press Tate, aged thirty five years. About twelve years ago he married Emma Edens, daughter of J. A. Edens. While God, in his all wise Providence, has seen fit to remove him from this world, and transplant in His kingdom above, we are left to sympathize with his surviving friends. (edited)
