William Bailey enlisted in Albemarle County, Virginia in 1776 and served two years under Captain Walker, 9th Virginia Regiment, and was at Brunswick and Saratoga. Received discharge at White Horse, fifteen miles from Philadelphia. Applied for pension Kanawha County, Virginia, May 14, 1833. Age 79. Certificate granted September 16, 1833. Died February 28, 1837.
Married Sarah Sprouse May 1795, Albemarle County. Wife died July 17, 1851. Children's names: Nancy, 1798, married Mathew Phillips; Betsy, 1802, married David Graham; Sally, 1803, died at the age of 2; Samuel, 1805, Putnam County; James, 1806, Kanawha County; William, 1808, Putnam County; John, 1810, died 1861, Kanawha County; Lucinda, 1812, no children; Martha, 1814, married Joseph Lanham; Reuben, 1817. Nancy Bailey Phillips died Warren County, Kentucky about 1838 leaving seven children, oldest named James B. Betsy Graham lived in Buckingham, Nelson, or Albemarle County. John had three children: Mary, Elizabeth, and Martha Jane. Martha Lanham lived in Putnam County, Virginia. John, Pleasant, and Loving Lanham also mentioned. In Kanawha County, May 3, 1853 , Nancy Hill, age 76, formerly of Albemarle County, testified she was present at the marriage of Sarah Spouse and William Bailey May 1795, by Reverend Irving.
