.........................................................................................................................................................................

Annotations to the 1850 Kanawha Co, VA census (KVGS @1987) pg. 160, gives her name as "Sarah Ann or Anna Lewis". (presumably this is an error, a contraction of Anna Mace born in Lewis Co, VA)
.........................................................................................................................................................................

From the West Virginia Historical Magazine, October 1904 Edition, pages 302-304:

The above is a correct likeness of (photo of Mrs. Annie Mace). Mrs. Annie resides with her son-in-law, Mathew Sands, on the Mile Fork of Coopers Creek, Kanawha County, West Virginia. The photograph was taken by Miss Roberta Coleman, (Now Mrs. Dr. Hugh B. Nicholson), July 24, 1901, Grandmother Mace having rounded up her one hundred and fourth year in May last. I am not sure, but I am under the impression that she is the oldest living citizen of Kanawha County.

She is the daughter of Henry and Mary (Davis) Mace, and was born on Hackers Creek in what is now Webster County, West Virginia, in the month of May, 1800. When the subject of this sketch was a young girl her parents moved to Sutton, Braxton County, where they remained twelve or thirteen years, and then settled at Bulltown, on the Little Kanawha river, where the daughter Annie, at a little less than eighteen years of age, married Jacob Mace, her cousin, who was about twenty years her senior.

They next migrated to the West Fork Valley of the Little Kanawha river in Calhoun County and remained there until they came to Kanawha County in 1840 and located on the Mile Fork of Coopers Creek, six miles from Charleston, where she has ever since resided.
Out of eleven children born to her and her husband, but three are living - Henry, who is eighty past; Townsend, who is upwards of sixty-seven, and Rachel, the youngest of the family, who is fifty-five.

The husband, Jacob Mace, died in 1860, aged eighty years. His sister, Eunice Conrad, died in Gilmer County five years ago aged 117 years.

Mrs. Annie Mace, the subject of this sketch, has a sister, Mrs. Barbara Sands, mother of Mathew Sands, one of our thrifty and influential citizens of Kanawha County, who is ninety-one years old.

Our photographer, Miss Coleman, now Mrs. Nicholson, did not secure a picture of Mrs. Sands for the reason that she was on a few weeks' visit to a married son who resides near Clay Court House on Elk River. Both of these sisters, although one of them has more than rounded up a full century and is starting upon another, and the younger, herself nearly a century old, are sprightly and vigorous, and no one would take either of them to be nearly so old as they are known to be. They both travel about in the neighborhood as has been their custom for sixty-four years past, and the most of the time they are in excellent health.

Mrs. Mace informed me that her father was a soldier in the war of 1812, and that he was discharged at Norfolk, Virginia, from disease and wounds, and her mother rode on horseback to that city and brought her husband home to Braxton County where he, at that time resided. She remembers her mother's long absence on that trip, for the reason that she had to do all the housekeeping in her mothers' absence. She related to me some thrilling stories of her mother's adventures with wolves and other wild animals, which infested the country, nearly all the way to and from Norfolk.

Grandmother Mace is a woman of more than ordinary sense and judgment, and I can say from a personal acquaintance with her of almost a half century, that she is a woman of unusual ability and force of character. She is well known for many miles around her home, and all her acquaintances and neighbors will testify to her high character and moral worth as a citizen. She told me that she is living on borrowed time, and is patiently waiting for the Master's call to a nobler and better life.

I regret that I failed to secure a photograph of Mrs. Sands. She, however, came to Kanwaha county with her sister, Mrs. Mace, and has continually resided here ever since. Her husband, James Sands, died in 1863. There were born to them eight children, five of whom are now living.
.........................................................................................................................................................................

Obituary from a newspaper clipping (no date or newspaper given):

Mrs. "Annie" Mace, better known as "Gramma" Mace who was probably the oldest person in the state, died last week at her home on Mile Fork of Coopers Creek. She was 105 years old and was the widow of Jacob Mace, once a well known citizen of this county.

Mrs. Mace was born in Lewis County, Virginia, now Calhoun County, WV, in 1800, and in 1818 was married to Jacob Mace, they came to this county about seventy-five years ago, and here she resided until her death. She was the mother of a number of children, two of whom, Henry and Townsend Mace, survive her. These are aged respectively 83 and 80.

The funeral of Mrs. Mace will take place at the home at 11 o'clock this morning, and the interment will be made at rhe family burying grounds nearby.
