From West Virginia Newspapers Obituaries 1822-1899, Vol. 1, pg. 76:

The Kanawha Republican
February 13, 1850

Died at his residence near this place, on the evening of the 5th inst,. after an illness of less than 48 hours Thomas S. A. Mathews, in the 50th year of his age. For years he had been one of the active business men of Kanawha . In traversing the county in the performance of his duties as a surveyor, he had become more extensively acquainted with its mineral and agricultural resources than any other person in it. To him more than any other man is the community endebted for bringing into notice the source of wealth which the cannell coal presents. Honorable in his business transactions, courteous in his intercourse, a dutiful son, an affectionate husband and father, a kind neighbor, his loss will be deeply felt. (more, but hard to read.)
