The Kanawha Valley Star
July 14, 1857
Died on the 3rd inst., at his residence on Blue Creek, John Slack Senior, having on that day completed the 82nd year of his age. He was born July 4th, 1775, in Western Pennsylvania, and became a resident of Kanawha county in the year 1794. During thirty years of his life, he was a justice of the county, and during fifty or more years he was a member of the Methodist Church. He never sought and never acquired a large share of this worlds goods, and lived by the honest labor of his hands.

Died of consumption, in Charleston, May 11, 1842, Mrs. Polly Atkinson, wife of Mr. John Atkinson. She was the daughter of John and Comfort Slack and was born in Kanawha County on the 16th September 1805.
In her 27th or 28th year she attached herself to the Methodist Episcopal Church of which she remained a member until death. She was a kind and faithful friend, a loving wife, and affectionate mother.

In the name of God Amen
I Greenbury Samuels of the County of Kanawha and the State of Virginia being aged and infirm in body but sound of mind and disposong memory (for which I thank God) and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life and being desirous to dispose of all worldly estate as it hath pleased God to (...) me with. I hereby make my last will and testament. In the manner and form following that is to say
First I desire that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid out of my personal estate.
Secondly After the payment of my debts and funeral expenses I give and bequeath to my son John Samuels the land that I own joining John Caldwell and being a part of the land that I purchased of Jeremiah Holly.
Thirdly I give and bequeath to my daughter Rachel Twenty five Dollars and my large family Bible.
Fourthly I give and bequeath to my daughters Patsy and Sarah and Polly and Nancy and Rebecca to have the balance of my money and bonds equally between them collected by my executor hereafter named.
Fifthly I give and bequeath to my grandson Greenbury Thomas Shirkey my saddle and seven wonders of the world.
Sixthly I wish my executor to take (...) of my horse and lend him to my son John to raise a crop if he treats him well and then in the fall to sell said horse and (...) the brings to be divided between my five daughters that is Patsy and Sarah and Polly and Nancy and Rebecca.

Mrs. Adam Aultz, aged about ninety years, died Monday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. King Sheppard on the old Oakes farm. Deceased leaves a large number of relatives and friends to mourn her death. The remains will be laid to rest at 12 o'clock today.

The State
Wednesday, May 11, 1881
Mr. David Shirkey, an old and esteemed citizen of Sissonville, was found lying in the road dead a short distance from his home. Mr. Shirkey left home for a neighbors to procure some seed corn, this he obtained and left for home in apparent good health. Shortly afterwards his horse was seen with the sack still on his back, but Mr. Shirkey not with him. Suspecting something had happened to the old gentleman, a neighbor instituted search for him with the above results. Mr. Shirkey was eighty years of age and for a number of years a magistrate.
