Wife's General Notes
From West Virginia Newspapers Obituaries 1880-1893, Vol. 3, pg. 33:
The State
Wednesday, July 13, 1881
Died in the city of Washington, D.C., on the 5th inst. aged seventy six years, Mrs. Mary Stone Campbell, wife of Mason Campbell Esq., of that city.
Mrs. Campbell was the mother of Major A. H. Campbell, now in charge as chief engineer of the Wheeling, Parkersburg, and Charleston Railway, and three other sons and three daughters, all of whom are now living, except one daughter who die here many years ago. She was married the 4th of January, 1824, at the same time with her sister, Dulce, the second wife of the late James C. McFarland, deceased. It was a double wedding. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by the late Rev. Charles Page, an early minister of the Protestant Episcopal
Church of Charleston. She was one of several children of the late Calvin Chaddock, the first Presbyterian clergyman in Kanawha, all of whom are now gone, but one sister, now living in Portland, Maine. Mrs. Campbell was contempary with a large number of Charleston's active laborers over fifty years ago in establishing the Presbyterian Church in Kanawha. A benevolent, self sacrificing member of society--she cared little for self, but devoted her energies to the promotion of the welfare and happiness of those around her. There are but few survivors of a long list of county laborers with this faithful and unselfish servant of Christ.
Her venerable husband, eighty three years of age is a comptroller of the treasury in Washington, a position held by him for more than thirty years. In a letter announcing her death, to Mrs. Albert H. Campbell he writes: "After fifty seven years of union, thus we part. I feel that ere long I shall lie by her side, and lif's fitful fever pass away."
