Chicago, IL
from Sörgenloch, Rheinhessen

This family is based upon a marriage entry found in the St. Michael Catholic Church, Chicago chuirch records for 1865.  (The same church of the above Michael Sieben family after 1876).  On September 14, 1865 an Adam WAGNER, age 35, born in Ebersheim, Hesse-Darmstadt married a Margaret SIEBEN, age 21, born August 19, 1849 in Sörgenloch, Hesse-Darmstadt

Phillip was the son of Nicholas Wagner and Anna Marie Hartmann of Ebersheim.  Margaret was the daughter of Phillip SIEBEN and Margarethe MANN of Sörgenlogh.  Phillip Sieben and Margaret Mann were married in Sörgenloch November 10, 1837. (FHL microfilm #954771 Sörgenloch)

Joseph SIEBEN and Apollonia GABEL/GOBEL was a citizen of Abenheim, Hesse-Darmstadt and a farmer in Sörgenloch, Hesse-Darmstadt.  The names of some of their children were: John, Theresa, Valentin, Margaret, Leonard, Henry and Jacob.

Henry Sieben was born and baptized February 1, 1846 in Sörgenloch.  Jacob Sieben was born December 20, 1849 and baptized December 22, 1849 in Sörgenloch.  The baptism records report the following on the parents:

  • Henry:  Joseph Sieben, citizen of Abenheim, farmer in Sörgenloch, and Apolloniae nat. Gab.  Witness Henry Gobel.
  • Jacob:  Joseph Sieben, citizen in Abbenheim and farmer in Soergenloch, and Apoloniae nat. Gabel.
According to Montana: The Magazine of Western History winter 1979, (which says Henry was born in 1847) the family came to the US when Henry was five.  Three brothers, Henry, Jacob and Leonard traveled and worked between Illinois and Montana doing a variety of jobs including operating their own freight company. Henry eventually settled down near Helena, Montana where he started the Sieben Ranch which is still in existence today.  Leonard settled down in Geneseo, IL where his descendents operate the Sieben Hybrids company today.  Jacob took ill around 1895 and returned to Illinois where he died in 1904.

John Sieben, possibly the eldest son of Joseph and Appolonia, apparently came to the US separate of his parents and family.

Orphans in Chicago?
1880,.Lakeview Township, Cook County, IL from Prussia
The 1880 US Census as transcribed by the LDS on their census CD set shows four SEIBEN youth aged 11 to 19 recorded among a list of many other children with several nuns topping the list.  What may or may not be relevant is that this facility, boarding school or orphanage is spaced two households away from the Michael Weber family whose mother, a SIEBEN, was the aunt of Michael Sieben of the Sieben Brewery in Chicago.  NO connection can be found for these four children in Ebersheim however.

This dwelling may be the Angel Guardian Orphanage which was located on Ridge Blvd. at Devon Avenue.  (suggested by Joe Weber, a descendant of a brother of Michael Weber.)
