PART 1.                      Archibald Tanner Banning, Jr., (1884-1965)                                      

This genealogy is an extension and revision of one written by my father, Archibald Tanner Banning, Jr. for his family in 1930. Unfortunately his notes have been lost, so this time care has been taken to mark the sources of information in the text, and append a complete bibliography. The same form used by my father of dividing the ancestors into eight chapters, one for each of his great-grandparents, BANNING, TANNER, PECK, COWLEY, LOCKWOOD, MABIE, MOTT, and. HAWXHURST, is followed here; with the side lines of each within each chapter. The current method used by genealogists of using superscripts to denote generations is used, with the superscript 1 denoting the emigrant ancestor in that line, or if the emigrant is not yet known, the earliest known ancestor. New data, hitherto unpublished, has been checked against primary sources; town vital records, probate records, land records, church records; other sources are noted. When a  supposition is made, the reasons for it are given. When interesting anecdotes are known about ancestors or their close relatives, they are included. This is about people, not dates, and no apology is made for the occasional editorial comment.                            

Dates are all given in the current style, i.e. if the date was 11 February 1691/1692 it is here written 11 February 1692.  

Comments both pro and con are welcome, especially those that will tend to prove or disprove one of my questioned relations. New information will be added when it has been received and checked.     The file is being continually revised and extended.
