PVT. WILLIAM C. CORDLE
Co. D, 65 Regt., GA Vol, CSA
1830 - 1865
William "Calloway" Cordle, Sr., was the son of Absalom J. and Mary Jane Duncan Cordle.
He was married to Sarah Selena Green.
"Calloway Cordle, husband of Selena, served in the Civil War (known as the War between the
States or the War for Southern Independence). The war began in April, 1861 and ended in
May, 1865. Military records indicate Calloway was hospitalized in Sept., 1864 and died in July, 1865.
We have been unable to find his buriel (sic) place which has led to speculation maybe he never returned
from the war, since no grave marker can be found for him near family members. We have documents
indicating Selena applied for a pension which was denied because Calloway died of cancer,
not war injuries." (Cordle Family History Book).
"Caudie, Caloway-pvt. in inf. battn., Smith's Legion, Ga., Vols., May 6, 1862. Transferred to
Co. D. 65th Regt. Ga. Inf. March 1863. Roll dated April 30, 1863, states he was discharged
at Loudon, Tenn., Jan. 21, 1863, but he continues to be shown on the roll. Sick in hospital
Sept. 15, 1863 - Aug. 31, 1864. Died July 24, 1865, Co. D. 65th Regiment, Ga. Volunteer
