"I found this wonderful story about Rhoda Summerville Cunningham yesterday, July 19, 2000, while doing research at the Buncombe County Genealogical society in Ashville, North Carolina. It was written in 1901 by Harvey H. Hanna (born June 6, 1821) who descends from James and Sarah Cunningham Patton. Sarah was a sister to George W. Cunningham, my great-great-grandfather. I quote as written:

Rhoda Summerville Cunningham

"I will now speak of Rhoda Cunningham. She was my great grandmother. She was born in Dinnegal Co., Ireland, in 1732. She died in Bedford Co., Tenn., Jan. 12, 1831, in her 99 year. As she was a twin her aunt took her to raise. When she was about grown her father and mother Summerville decided to emigrate to America. She remained in Ireland with her aunt that had raised her. Her father and mother with a large family left her and got on board of a ship that had a crew of 500 persons. The captain of the ship put off the entire crew on an island and gave them rations for a few days. He claimed that he had to go off to a point. Then he would return to the island and take them on board and take them to Boston. He took their goods with him, and never returned. The crew ran out of provisions, and 450 had perished before they were found, and could be relieved. The mother of the Summerville family was the only one of the family that survived. All that survived were brought to Boston. In the course of time the mother, Mrs Summerville married a Mr. Davidson. To that union one son was born, and named William. He became a man, and had a family before the beginning of the Revolutionary War. He was made a General and fell in battle fought on Catawbe River in N.C. William Davidson was half-brother to my great grandmother Rhoda Cunningham. William Davidson left sons and daughters who emigrated to Kentucky in an early day.

Rhoda Cunningham, my great grandmother spoken of above; Hwe maiden name was Summerville. I can't say whether she was married in Ireland or America. She married a Mr. Cunningham. They raised a very large family of children. They lived for a number of years in Lancaster Co., Penn. Then they lived in S. C. Then in Buncombe Co., N.C. I will give you a part of their children's names - Humphrey, James, and John, he was drowned in East Tenn. I will now give the names of her daughters after marriage. Rhoda married James Alexander. Tehy reared a family and lived and died in Buncombe Co., N.C. Sallie married James Patton, who was my grandfather as before stated. They raised eleven daughters and one son that all married in Tenn. Katy Cunningham married Mathew Patton. The names of their children: Thomas married twice in Tenn. He raised a large family, and died in randolph Co., MO., part of his offspring are in M., part in Kansas, and part in Texas. Another daughter of Rhoda Cunningham married Aaron Patton, cousin to James and Matthew Patton. Her name was Magdalene Patton. They raised a family, lived and died in Buncombe Co., N.C. Others of the family I cannot name.

My great granmother Rhoda Cunningham and all of her people were Protestants. I have it through tradition that Rhoda Cunningham's great grandmother was Protestant and was thrown overboard with many other Protestants into the sea, and drowned because they would not renounce the Protestant faith. That was done during the Roman persecutions in Ireland. I have no knowledge of any of our relations that were ever Catholic; they were mostly of teh Presbyterian faith until teh last one or two generations. My great grandmother, Rhoda Cunningham and my grandfather and grandmother Hanna, and all of their children were all religious.

My great grandmother and my two grandfathers and my two grandmothers all died in Bedford Co., Tenn. My grandmother, Sally Patton died August 13, 1825. Grandfather, James Patton died August 9, 1827. Grandmother, Polly Hanna, died 1828 or 1829. Great grandmother, Rhoda Cunningham died Jan. 14, 1831. I can remember when they were buried. Grandfather, Andrew Hanna, died some years before I was born.

They were all buried in the same cemetery with a large number of younger relations. If my recollection is correct the cemetery is a half mile or more south from where Grandfather Patton lived for many years, before he died. His house was on a little hill 20 or 50 rods east from the east bank of the Garrison Fork of Duck River. His house was 30 or 40 rods south from the mouth of State Creek. My father, William Hanna lived two miles east from the mouth of Strate Creek, about 20 or 30 rods from its north bank. The course of the said creek was about due west from its source until it passed where father lived. Then its course was little north of west until it ran into Garrison Fork. The cemetery spoken of is 12 miles east of Shelbyville and 1 mile south of the town of Fairfield and 3 miles from the east line of Bedford Co. My great grandmother, Rhoda Cunningham lived with my grandfather, James Patton for 40 years before he died. After his death she lived with her grand-daughter and husband, Rhoda and Thomas Couch. They lived half mile or more southwest from the cemetery on the west side of Garrison Fork. Uncle Joseph and aunt Katy Couch live something over a quarter of a mile a little east of south from the cemetery where our grandfathers and grandmothers and uncles and aunts and a large number of our cousins are buried."

This wonderful story came from "Biographical History of the Houston, Patton and Ray Families." compiled by E.H. Hanna. " Mary Lehr
