Ellis Eddington McGee, 80, of Caldwell, died peacefully Sunday, Nov. 24, 1996, of natural causes at a Boise subacute hospital.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, at the Dakan Funeral Chapel, Caldwell. The Rev. James Burch of the Caldwell United First Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Canyon Hill Cemetery, Caldwell.

Ellis was born June 12, 1916, (weighing only three pounds and with the German measles), to John Eddington and Winnie Frances McGee. He was the ninth of 12 children. He graduated from Eden High School in 1935, and then moved to California during the Depression to find work.

In 1939, he joined the Second Division of the Marine Corps. His tour of duty included Iceland, New Zealand, Solomon Islands, Gilbert Islands, and Hawaiian Islands. He participated in actions in Guadalcanal and Tarawa, Saipan. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in Saipan. At the time of his honorable discharge in 1945, he was a platoon sergeant.

Following his discharge, Ellis continued to work in the Oakland, Calif., area, where he renewed a friendship with Gladys McGee, a New Zealand immigrant whom he had met during his tour of duty in 1942. He married her at Oakland on July 16, 1949. They moved to Elgin, Ore., where Mr. McGee worked as a police officer until 1954. They had two children, David and Karen, and subsequently moved to Caldwell, Idaho, to be closer to family.

From 1954 to 1994, Ellis and Gladys lived and worked in Caldwell. He worked for 23 years as a postal carrier. He was an active member and past president of the local chapter of the National Association of Letter Carriers.

He was a member of the Caldwell Elks Lodge for many years.

He loved to golf and bowl in his spare time. His personal goal, during his latest illness, was to get better so that he could improve his golf game. He was a good man with a great sense of humor and a strong set of values. We'll miss you Dad. We all know that you would rather be golfing!

Ellis was preceded in death by his parents; his 11 brothers and sisters; and his wife, Gladys. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, David and Lisa McGee of Orlando, Fla.; his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Jack Vant of Boise; his grandchildren, Julia McGee, Megan and Matthew Ellis, and Kathleen Vant; and several nieces and nephews.
