Sanders led a very interesting life. With much adventure as
possible. He is where the line ends or as far as we have been able to
find. He was born in 1787 in North Carolina somewhere. We do not know
his parents names. However we know he was a Chickamaunga Cherokee at
least half. But then the surname of Thompson is English. The
Chickamanga Cherokee is a break off from the Cherokee tribe. Having to
do with some problems with ideas within the Cherokee tribe. The
Chickamanga first chief was the son of the Cherokee Tribe chief. He was
a bit rebelous. Anyway the broke off with his followers and ended up in
Kentucky, Missouri and Arkansas. The main Cherokee Tribe was in North
Carolina and got along well with the white folks there embracing the
white man's ways greatly. Up until the white man found out how
prosperous the Cherokees were becoming and the white man wanted what the
Cherokee had. Then the trail of tears came and the main part of the
tribe ended up in Oklahoma area.
Before that though many of the Cherokee intermarried with the
English and Scottish settlers. That must be where the name of Thompson
came from. I do have a lead on where to get more information about
these intermarriages. I will try in the future.
Sanders served in the mititary during the War of 1812. He enlisted
in North Carolina and was discharged in Norfolk Virginia. He applied
for pension in Ozark County, Missouri.
He married at least four times for sure and maybe one other. Peggy
Brazier in 1813 in North Carolina, Margaret Brasher in 1816 in North
Carolina, Isabella Dossett on 17 Jul 1817 in Muhlenberge County,
Kentucky. Also another woman by the name of Telitha after Isabella
died. I am not sure what happened with the first two marriages to Peggy
and Margaret. There is another woman that married a Sanders Thompson in
North Carolina named Elenor Clarke. But I find it unlikely he would
have married at the age of 10 (so probably not).
Isabella Dossett is the wife we are through. She was also from
North Carolina. However they were married in Kentucky. She is the
daughter of Thomas Dossett/Dorset (both spellings have been found), and
Nancy Cates. Thomas fought in the Revolutionary War.
Sanders was known as one of the "Old Settlers". So when you hear
this terminology in Kentucky and Missouri especially they refer to them
as such. They had seven children, Willis M., John W., Mary, Isabell,
Richard, Frances, And William A. They were all born in Kentucky. The
family moved to Missouri later. The Southern part of Missouri. He was
a farmer and owned several farms in different places during his
lifetime.
Sander and Isabella were members of the the Mount Lebanan General
Baptist Church in Ozark County Missouri. They also for a time moved to
Independence County Arkansas. There were all done in groups both family
and as a tribe. Then they moved back up into Ozark County area again.
In his later years Sanders lived with his son Richard in Missouri.
He died 1 March 1876 in Ozark County, Missouri. He is buried there. I
believe with his wife Isabelle and also with Telitha. They are buried
in the Norris/Piland Cemetery.
While I was there for the Thompson reunion in 1996 we a caravan of
family found this Cemetery which took some doing. It is north of
Thornfield Missouri in Ozark County 4 miles on Highway JJ. There is a
sign on the gate on the east side of the road. Go east through the
gate, through the farmers fields about one mile east and then north.
The cemetery is well kept. There is a fence around it with trees.
Beautiful view. But the headstones are truly in trouble. In 1991
another member of the family visited there and found his headstone. But
the cemetery is owned privately and the current owner had little regard
for the deceased or their graves. The headstones were used as chopping
blocks for firewood.. When I went there we could not find a headstone
for him. I truly felt badly about this. I wish there were something we
could do about it.
