Iowa, January 19, 1889 - McKINLEY - Died, at the residence of his son, John McKINLEY, in Grand Meadow twp., on Friday, Jan 4, 1889, of heart disease, Mr. Archibald McKINLEY, aged 84 years, 10 months and 9 days. Deceased was born in Ireland, Mar. 25, 1804. He was united in marriage to Nancy MORRISON in 1827 and enjoyed 53 years of wedded life. Eight sons blessed this union, five* of whom survive him, John & James of Clayton Co., William of Chicago, Alex of Clermont and Archie of Forest Hill, Cal. He emigrated to New York at an early day and later to Iowa, coming here in 1863, where he has since resided. He lead a truly Christian life, and came as near the ideal man as it is possible for human frailty to approach. During his last moments when it was difficult to determine to which world he belonged, being speechless yet conscious, his eyes directed upward, immortality and glory were the imprints on his countenance, and muttering passages of scripture all at once the 'weary wheels of life stood still.'
*Archie's wife Nancy (1880) and sons Patrick, Daniel (1853) & Michael (1887) predeceased him.

Obituary of Archibald McKinley (born 3/25/1804 probably in Co Antrim, N Ireland) original was in Alice Beatrice Touhy McKinley's scrapbook - clipping is probably from an Iowa (Postville, Grand Meadow Twnshp, Clayton County) newspaper - date of Archibald's death:  the death Cert. says 4 Feb. 1889.  Grave marker says 4 Jan 1889.

Mckinley Farmhouse.jpg (50081 bytes) At the residence of his son (left), John McKinley, in Grand Meadow Township on Friday, Jan 4, 1889, of heart disease, MR. ARCHIBALD McKINLEY.  Deceased was the father of James McKinley, Chairman Board of Supervisors (school board?), was born in Ireland March 25, 1804, being 84 years, 10 months and 9 days old. He was united in marriage to Nancy Morrison in 1827 and enjoyed 53 years of wedded life. Eight sons blessed this union, five of whom survive him.  He emigrated to New York at an early day and afterwards to Iowa, coming here (Iowa) in 1863, where he had since resided. Deceased lead a truly model Christian life and came as near the ideal man as it is possible for human frailty to approach. He was one of those few who "live not unto themselves, but unto him who died for them and rose again." " As a man lives so shall he die" was never more beautifully illustrated than in the death of this man, calm, peaceful and resigned. The dark valley had no terrors for him. During his last moments when it was difficult to tell to which world he belonged, being speechless, yet conscious, his eyes directed upward, immortality and glory were the imprints on his countenance and, muttering passages of scripture all at once the "Weary wheels of life stood still."
