Cartwright - Scraps of Family History

CARTWRIGHT

Edward Cartwright came from New Hampshire to Nantucket in 1673 and married Elizabeth Trott. Their daughter Susanna married William Stratton and their daughter Mary Stratton married Thomas Moores. Of Edward, I can write little that is to his credit as he seems to be always in trouble and fined many times for his intemperance. He never held any office on the Island, although history records that he owned hogs - for in the Coffin - Gardner wrangle, that took place on December 28, 1674 to be exact, Stephen Hussey was fined for contempt of court in saying to Captain John Gardner "Meddle with your own business, I gave Edward Cartwright authority to let his hogs run on the Common".
