Hobart - Scraps of Family History

HOBART

Edmund Hobart of Hingham, England was born 1574 and married Margaret Dewey and came to Mass in 1633. He was a freeman in 1634 and also a constable the same year and Deputy to Great and General Courts in the years 1639, 1640, 1642. His second wife was Sarah, the widow of Reverend John Lyford.

His son Peter Hobart was a minister and was born in England in 1604 and came to this country in 1635 and first went to Charleston, then with his father and their familities moved to Bear Cove about 12 miles from Boston which they renamed Hingham after their English home town. Reverend Peter was a twin son. His religious opinions did not always agree with the civil authorities and he had considerable trouble thereby. The name of his first wife is not known but she died in 1645 and he married second Rebecca, daughter of Richard Ibrook by the two wives he had seventeen children. His salary as minister was at one time 70 pounds a year and the wonder is how did he raise such a large family as in his will he named fifteen of them. He was made freeman in 1635

Hannah Hobart, his daughter, married John Brown of Salem and their son married Rachel Gardner. Their daughter Abial married Sylvannus Hussey.

The Hobarts are said to have descended from William the Conqueror.
