Severance - Scraps of Family History

SEVERANCE

From Severine Mountains in Lanquedor, France

John Severance came to this country in the ship Elizabeth in 1634 and settled in Salisbury, Mass., being one of the original proprietors of that town. He became a Freeman in 1637 and in 1671 he was a commission officer in the Militia. He married in 1635 Abigail Kimball, daughter of Richard and Ursula (Scott) Kimball who were members of the company who came over on the Elizabeth. Abigail died in 1658 and then married Susanna Ambrose. John and Abigail’s daughter Mary married in 1633 James Coffin, son of Tristnam Coffin and Dionis and were blessed with fourteen children, five of whom we are interested in , namely:

James Jr 1668, md. in 1741 1st Love Gardner- daughter of Richard and Sarah
2nd Ruth Gardner- daughter of John Gardner,
                                                                                       their son md. Lydia Bunker
Nathaniel 1671, md. in 1721 Damarius Gayer - daughter of William, their son Benjamin md. Iedida                                                                                        Hussey

Abigail                 md.                 Nathaniel Gardner -son of Richard and Sarah,
their daughter Judith md. Benjamin Barnard

These marriages brought about some very close relationships which a reference to the Coffin and Gardner charts will show.
