TIMPSON
The first Timpson that we can count with relative certainly is THOMAS TIMPSON was born October 25, 1765. The location of his birth is a matter in dispute. "Burkes Landed Gentry" lists Thomas as being born in County Leitrim, Ireland. However, research done by Howard A. Thomas, of Long Island City , NY dated 1960 tends to differ. Mr. Thomas was in contact with a Samuel Coulter Timpson (descendent of Cornelius Timpson) and was provided with a family Bible abstract:"Thomas Timpson Jr., first child of Thomas Timpson and Susannah, was born on October 25, 1766 (1765) in New York State.(Possibly. Westchester County), and died August 01, 1856 in Westchester (now Bronx) NY."The parents of this Thomas Timpson (born 1765) are, according to this bible abstract, Thomas Timpson and Susannah (Jacobs) . Research done at NYC Municipal Archives states that this Thomas died in the Almshouse and was buried in Potter's Field. Since our Thomas (b.1765) was conducting large real estate transactions in the city at the time of this death (and was listed in Burkes Landed Gentry), it is unlikely that Thomas Timpson b. 1739/40 could have been the father of Thomas(b.1765), unless there were two Thomas Timpsons or there was some family dispute.Samuel Coulter Timpson was descended from Cornelius Timpson. According to his family bible, Thomas and Cornelius were brothers. In the 1793 directory, Cornelius at 18 Nassau Street and in the same line of business as Thomas. Our Thomas also named one of his sons Cornelius, so it is likely that Thomas and Cornelius were brothers. Our Thomas (b.1765) married KATHARINE VAN TOREN on September 10, 1785 in Trinity Church, By Rev Mr. Moore. Katharine was the daughter of JOHN VAN TOREN and "WIDOW" FORRESTER. She was born November 16, 1766, and died January 14, 1848. Thomas was admitted to John Street (NY) Methodist Church on 9/15/1790. His occupation was that of a cabinet maker, as well as manufacturer of Windsor chairs. In 1790 he was listed with one of the Volunteer Fire Companies. In Barretts History of New York Merchants, Thomas was named Vice-President of the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen. According to the NYC directory of 1793, his home/shop was on Broad Street. Other city directories list him:
In 1801, Thomas Timpson bought from the VanToren estate the property on Beekman Street, about 115 feet east of Nassau Street for about $5000. and subsequently sold it to William Adee, who married his daughter Sarah E.B.Timpson.Thomas was also an Assistant Alderman in NYC for the Seventh Ward during the years 1808-1810. In 1811, Thomas purchased at Westchester County (Bronx) a farm of about 60 acreson Eastchester Road near todays Pelham Parkway, costing about $9,000, where he lived until his death. In various deeds he styled himself as a "Yeoman" (Gentlemen Farmer). This property was sold by the Executer in 1871 to John Hunter for $35,000 who resold 26 acres of it in 1905 to Judge Brady & Otto Wagner for $100,000. These two sold to Hudson P. Rose, noted Bronx Real Estate Developer, for sub-division to city lots. The balance, mostly salt meadow, being sold to the N.Y.H.&H. R.R. There was a railroad station at the edge of their property named "Timpsons" Timpson Place in the Bronx, is also named for the family. It is not certain whether it is named after This Thomas or Thomas W. Timpson, who was one of the original trustees of the town of Morrisania.Thomas and Katharine are both buried in the family vault in St. Peters Churchyard, Westchester Avenue, Bronx.Thomas And Katharine had 12 chilldren:
Of these 12 children, the 1840 NYC directory lists:
Thomas and Katharines second child John was born November 06, 1788 in New York, NY, and died February 18, 1855. John was baptized on February 22, 1898 at the John St. (NY) Methodist Church. He was married twice, first to MARY W. GILCREST on February 21, 1811. Mary was born November 04, 1792, and died November 07, 1817. He later married MARY TAYLOR on December 05, 1818 in her family home, House No. 105/107 Washington Street. She was the daughter of BENJAMIN TAYLOR and MARY BARKER.
