Katie Wheelers birthday.......b. 1886
Today has been very dull. I packed away the Xmas goods today and arranged the center table. We got in a few turkeys today--sixteen. Miss Sallie Hamner gives a big party tonight. I went over to take Miss Emma to party, but, as she hadnt finished her dress, I came back and attended the Young Peoples Prayer Meeting, then went back over there after her and we got to the party at 9 oclock. Had such a nice time. Miss Jeanie Leftwich and I had a few words this eve.....she is a daisy! Emma told me about her photo to S. tonight, too. I was very much surprised, but then, such is life!!!!
A sample of the photo album belonging to Wilbert S. Myers, c. 1895 Wed., Jan. 2.
Today has been real pretty. Collections good, but trade dull. I was out collecting awhile today and had good success. Elbert Dunlap left for St. Louis this a.m. Raymond Edmonds, Arthur Dunlap, and his friend, Mr. Marbut, left for school at Columbia, Mo. On account of ice, we got no evening mail. Rettie and Mary spent today in the country. I attended out Young Peoples Prayer Meeting tonight, which met at the Christian Church. We had quite a good meeting. I walked over home with Emma and stayed until 11 oclock.

...................................................................................................................

I found this accordian style photo album along with the old diaries. I think he framed the photos and then used his "stamps" for decoration. He identified some of the photos, but not others (as you can see). If anyone recognizes the people in the photo, at right, please let me know.

Thurs., Jan. 3.
It has been spitting snow all day, but has not yet amounted to much. Trade very dull. This a.m. I copied the Xmas goods invoice, and this eve I went through my shoe dept. and filled-in. Also cleaned off my shoe counter and the ball-yarn dept. It is getting colder. We got the mail this eve all okay. I attended the Young Peoples Prayer Meeting again tonight, which met at the Baptist Church. We had quite a good crowd and we had a good meeting, too. I walked over home with Emma, but didnt go in. Syd Taylor was there and he did go in. Emma gave me a box of homemade candy, and it was fine, too!

Today has been a very quiet day. I brought wood up this a.m., cleaned my lamps, filled-up the button machine, and packed two boxes of turkey-feathers . It has looked as tho it might snow today, but it hasnt yet. I attended the Young Peoples Prayer Meeting tonight at the Christian Church. After services, I walked home with Emma, went in, and stayed until after 11 oclock. Spent...O! Such a sweet eve! You know it!!! I paid my personal tax today, also my Church dues to the Methodist Church.

On account of the Methodists Conference, the Young Peoples Prayer Meeting will meet at the Baptist Church tonight. I didnt get to attend, though, as it was Saturday night. Trade has been slow today as it has been sleeting, or misting-rain, most all day. Fred Sibley and wife came home this eve from their wedding trip. Owen Smith brought me in a list to a party at his house on next Thursday night. Emma was in the Store this eve. I fixed a package for her to send to Wakenda. I mailed it for her also. As it was raining, I got my umbrella and loaned it to her to go home under. After we closed up and I had gotten a shave, I went down to Noonans Store and played a harp while Miss Gertie seconded on piano ( a piano that was there on exhibition).
Sun., Jan. 6.
Went to breakfast at 9 oclock. Took Emmas presents up as I went, to show Rettie. After I had cleaned my room, Syd Taylor and I took a walk down to the River to see if after it had blocked. Going from dinner, I met Maude Wheeler at our gate and walked up home with her.....went in and stayed about an hour and spent a real pleasant time. Made arrangements for Richard Haynie and Buford Casebolt with them for the party at Judge Smiths on next Thursday night. I went down to the Christian Church at 4 oclock and walked home with Emma from Missionary Meeting, and stayed until time for the Young Peoples Prayer Meeting. Then we went to that at the Baptist Church. After that was over, we went down to Mr. Becks oyster parlor and had oysters. Then we went home where I spent a very sweet eve indeed. I got a letter from Newt today. I also wrote a letter to Mrs. Reid today and filled in the blanks she sent me for Missionary work. Quite a crowd is over on the hill coasting tonight. Valentines Day. I printed a sign this morning for the Taylor Mercantile Companys new Store over at the Miami Station. Syd is going over in the morning to put it up. Today trade has been fair. The young ladies of this city gave a Banquet to the young men tonight at Taylors Hall. They didnt allow any of the boys to take them there, but the boys could take them home. They had a nice crowd there of about 75, and a splendid supper. It was a cobweb drawing for supper. Miss Gussie Edmonds was my partner. Miss Alice Cordell gave me a shorter catechism tonight (Presbyterian doctrine). I went home with Miss Emma tonight (she ate with Mike Sandage).
Fri., Feb. 15.

At 6 oclock I came to my room and fixed for Church, then went back for Emma and we went to the Baptist Church to hear Mr. Hatcher preach, but, it being so crowded, we couldnt get in, so we went down to the Christian Church to hear Bro. Wilson. Charlie Miller was there to see Ruth. Emma gave us some good cake tonight, a piece of her Banquet-cake that she had left.
Mon., Feb. 18.
Snowing and sleeting. Today has been somewhat of a disagreeable day. Trade has been dull. I picked out about 250-pair of ladies, misses, and childrens shoes today to go over to the Store at the Station. Our Epworth League meets at 6:30 oclock tonight, as the Meeting is now going on at the Baptist Church. I made out my quarterly report, also my monthly report for Missionary work this eve. Mr Jeter at home today, sick. We have had a very nice little trade today, although it has been a gloomy day outside. I met a Mr. Irvine today, from Colorado, who knows Daisy Duggins there. He is a cousin to Miss Laura Irvine at Fairville. Didnt get to go to supper until after I closed up tonight, which was at 7 oclock. Took a walk to corner with Elbert Dunlap tonight and up as far as Bures corner where we talked a long while, then I took my departure for my room and retired at 9 oclock sharp. This Mr. Irvine is Miss Ida Haynies solid fellow. U - know - it!!

McDougall took a photo of the Miami crowd. McD. and I went out to Mount Carmel after dinner. It was the first time I was ever there. We then came on back, stopped a few minutes at Fairville, and then on home at 4 oclock. We had a fine trip, though it rained on us a little while coming home. I went over to see Emma at 4:20 oclock and stayed until 6:15. Came on up to supper, going up to see Mr. Jeter who is still sick. Then, after supper, I went over to see Emma again. My!.. if it didnt rain this eve! We need it, but it was bad on the Odd Fellows as they didnt get many to attend the grave decorations, the services at Baptist Church this eve, or at the Christian Church tonight. Today has been hot, trade slow, although a good many people in town this eve. We boys met tonight and paid up our dues on camping trip. It has been raining all day long! Trade only fair.....only sold $108.00 today, hardly half what we sold today a year ago. The Baptists had an entertainment at Church tonight at 6:30 oclock. The Christians had an entertainment at Hall tonight at 8:30 oclock. I didnt attend either one. We closed up tonight at 10:45 oclock and, as I came up to my room, I found a table-stand and a lovely cover. No card! I suppose it is from Lem and Mary. It is such a cute table....what I have longed for, for a long, long time. Retired at 11:30 oclock, tired and worn out.
Wed., Dec. 25.
Maude Wheeler......b. 1874
I gave Lem an ink outfit, Mary, a salad dish, Lewis a large 4 1/2 lb. of stick candy and a drum, Rettie, a moquette rug and a set of knives, Papa, 24-sacks (4 oz) smoking tobacco, Emma, a handkerchief case (opal, trimmed in gold) with two linen and two silk handkerchiefs. I received a nice table stand and cover from Lem and Mary, a glass box and dresser scarf from Rettie, and a fine hand-worked paper holder from Emma (it is lovely). We all took dinner with Lem and Mary today. I returned thanks to Emma this eve (she, to me, too). I received a nice letter from the Aetna Loan Co. today. We had a little skiff of snow on the ground this a.m. I was at Store all day long. Trade very dull. Went down to the Christian Prayer Meeting and went home with Emma. Went in and spent an hour or two with her. We spent such a sweet eve together.
Thurs., Dec. 26.
Louise Miller......b. 1873
Edith Mertens.......b. 1874
Mary Jessup......b. 1874
Today has been real pretty. Trade very good! I have been working on various depts. at Store today. We closed up tonight at 7:15 oclock. Elbert and I came to my room and he stayed with me until 9 oclock and we talked of old-times. I then wrote some and retired at 10 oclock. Rettie gave me a bar of buttermilk soap tonight.
Fri., Dec. 27.
The Masons have a big Oyster Supper tonight at our old Store. Talked with Dr. Russell through the telephone this morning. I went to the Masons Supper and had a fine time....took Miss Emma. She sang a song tonight. Quite a crowd was there. Met Miss Holmes of Kansas City (the $300,000 girl). Trade was splendid today.
Sat., Dec. 28.
Today has been a very, very dull day! No one in town hardly. We closed up tonight at 9 oclock. Came to my room, made a fire, and did some writing. The Methodists are having a candy-pull over at our Storeroom tonight. It has commenced snowing tonight. I went over to the candy-pull at 10 oclock and walked over home with Emma. She gave me some candy. I had Elbert with me tonight (also one year ago tonight, too). He called at Bells tonight....didnt come in until after 11 oclock. We retired at 1 oclock.
Sun., Dec. 29.
Today has been a gloomy one. Elbert got up at 8:20 this morning, but I didnt get up until after 10 oclock. Then straightened up my room and got myself ready for the mail and my dinner. Elbert and I took a walk down to the River this eve, after dinner, and talked to Geo. Burruss until 3:30 oclock. Then we came back to Store. Elbert went calling and I came to my room and wrote on my books. At 5 oclock I went down to Lems to see little Lewis awhile, then at 6:15 oclock I went over to see Emma. We went to the Christian Church. Then we came back and spent a sweet eve together. Harrison Wheeler came home with Ruth tonight from Church. This is the last time Ill see Emma this year.....to call on her... Bye, Bye!!!
Mon., Dec. 30.
Today has been an awful dull, dull day! I changed my sign on the mirror this eve. Went over to the schoolhouse this eve to announce Bro. Briggs to preach at the M. E. Church tonight. As I was going to Church, I caught up with Emma and Ruth, and Mary & Sadie Jessup, so walked in Church with Emma, then walked home with them after. This is a lovely night, cold though! Roads are awful is the reason there are no parties this Xmas.
Tue., Dec. 31.
There is a party of Mertens tonight, given in honor of the Misses Mertens. Circumstances were such that I couldnt attend. Ahem! I had a bid, though. (Emma didnt attend either) You know it! I put away the Xmas goods this eve. Put out a line of hats on table. Printed a streamer for it....choice for 98-cents. Trade dull today. It has been trying to snow some, but hasnt yet succeeded. Closed up tonight at 7:30 oclock. I came up to room and straightened my books up for this year, ready to commence on my books in the a.m. for the New Year, 1896. I only lost 6 1/2 days this year from work, 4 1/2 for pleasure, 2 on sickness. I called on Emma 248 times this year. Bye-bye old year! May we lead a better life in the one we are just entering.... Wib
