JANUARY

Sun., Jan. 1, 1899
As we were up so late last night, we didnt get up until late this a.m., 7:30 oclock. I helped Emma with her work and she went to Sunday School. But, as I had such a bad cold, I stayed at home and did some little writing. Emma didnt attend Church this morning. I spent the day in house all day, as my cold was real bad. It has been a very pretty morning, but a gloomy eve. Miss Caddie Greenabaum, Syd Wheeler, and George Wheeler were here this eve. There was preaching at the Methodist Church only, today and tonight. I hurt my finger this a.m., on the stove, trying to get a big chunk in. We retired tonight at 9 oclock. Still cold out. Remember the joke tonight on Emmas cat!
Mon., Jan. 2.
Today has been a very dull day as to trade. This a.m. was very bright, but this eve a little cloudy. We took down all of our decorations today and cleared away the Xmas goods. I put out a remnant counter late this eve. Frank Webster is now helping Dr. A. A. Wheeler in his new store. Syd Wheeler left for Jefferson City, Mo., this eve. Walter Utley left for Quincy, Mo., this eve. We stopped getting milk from John Roe today. Emma and I called on Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Burns tonight, also Mrs. Hill, who is there with them.
Tue., Jan. 3.
This has been a gloomy day. Trade, though, very good considering. I was out collecting this a.m., for Store, and this eve, for Church. Mr. Milt Burns is putting in our big stove at the Church today. Emma and I went over and called on Mr. and Mrs. Peterman this night and spent a very pleasant hour. I fished my water bucket out of the cistern today, at noon. It is very windy out tonight and it looks as though it may rain or snow, although it is very warm out now. John Hanna put glass in at the Store this eve, in the front door.
Wed., Jan. 4.
This a.m., early, was very, very dark and we had some rain at 7:30, but it cleared up later and turned very cold. The sun was out this afternoon. Trade slow. I went through the wallpaper dept. today and made a wallpaper book of remnants only. I went back to the Store tonight and stayed awhile, and finished my book of wallpaper samples while Emma was attending her Prayer Meeting. Emma will teach the 3rd grade at school on tomorrow for Miss Eva Miller, who is sick. They didnt quite get the stove done up at the Church today. We retired tonight at 9:30 oclock.
Thurs., Jan. 5.
I was out collecting this a.m. Trade very, very little. I have been working on stock all day, in fact, all week. They finished our furnace at the Church this eve. Emma taught school for Miss Eva Miller today, who is very sick. Emma will also teach again tomorrow, if nothing happens. The young Rudd boy, 20-years-old, Sunday, was buried today (or this eve, rather) at 3 oclock (Lem went). We retired tonight at 8:15 oclock. It is very cold out. I ate dinner by myself today, for the first time since I was married.
Fri., Jan. 6.
This has been a real pretty day, but awful cold. Not very much trade. Emma was at school again today, so I took my dinner up to the Store. They got the stove all okay at Church today, although papa got part of his whiskers burnt-off! We have been working on stock today. I was up to see old Mr. Vanice this a.m. We had a half-inch of snow this a.m. Caddie Greenabaum was here tonight and took supper with us and stayed until 10 oclock. We enjoyed the eve fine, playing Authors. We retired at 10:45 p.m. It is very, very cold out tonight.
Sat., Jan. 7.
This has been a real pretty day overhead, but a real cold day. It has also been a very dull day as to trade. The roads are so awfully bad that its hard for the people to get to town. I loaned Mrs. Vanice my folding cot today. I was up to see her this a.m., and also this eve. Emma was also up. Mr. Vanice is no better. Emma went to see Eva Miller, too, and then Emma and I went to see Mr. Al Wheeler and Jim, who are also sick. Then we came home and remained for the night. Caddie Greenabaum came over and we played muggins until 9:30. Then Emma and I both took a bath and retired at 11:15 oclock.
Sun., Jan. 8.
I got up at 7:15 a.m. I helped Emma with her work. We both attended Sunday School. She attended her Church and I attended mine. Bro. J. A. Creighton preached his first sermon in our new Church this a.m. Mrs. Creighton joined the Church today. The stove works all okay. We had a slight sprinkle of rain and a little blow of snow between 1:30 and 2:45 p.m., but it did not amount to anything at all. I spent the eve at home - all eve - with Emma and others, as follows: Caddie and Lottie Greenabaum, Cyrena and Kate Wheeler. Cyrena brought us a big dish of ice cream and a plate of dough-nuts. Oh, it was fine! Emma and I attended Church tonight at our new Church, although it was bad out. Geo. brought us another bowl of cream over. They are good, sure!!
Mon., Jan. 9.
This has been an awful gloomy, blue day, and trade very, very quiet. Geo. and I commenced cleaning house this a.m., but stopped at noon, to go up to Bro. Creightons, to put down mattings. We two put down three mats and hung five shades, in 2-hours-and-thirty-five minutes. W. D. Taylor was here today. Mrs. and Mrs. Burns, Dr. Wheeler, Maude Wheeler, and Mrs. Hill were here tonight and we had a fine time playing games. It has turned real warm. We retired tonight at 10:45 p.m. I took my dinner to the Store today, again.
Tue., Jan. 10.
This certainly has been an awful gloomy day, misting rain all day. Trade very, very light. We finished house cleaning this eve, downstairs, and I tell you....I feel awful, awful tired. The Presbyterians gave Bro. Creighton and his wife a little donation tonight. I went around this a.m. and saw most of them (household goods that were being donated) and then tonight at 5 oclock I went around in the delivery wagon, picked up the goods, and took everything up to Rev. Creighton. And they were so pleased with everything. Emma and I retired at 8 p.m. tonight as we both were real tired.
Wed., Jan. 11.
One more real bad gloomy day....somewhat of a mist all day. I washed up around the water bucket this a.m., then washed the window on the door, and cleaned the closet. Clarence washed the showcases and the jet-chimneys and marked the shoes that came in on the eve of the 9th. I took Mrs. Vanice a sack of shavings and got one for myself, at the Church, this eve. I also fixed a spittoon box for Mr. Vanice and took it up to him. I took dinner at Lems today. This is Emmas last day at school for awhile. George is at home, sick, today. We got our insurance money today for the fire at the Store on Dec. 22, 1898. It was $30. Trade very quiet indeed. We retired at 9:30 tonight.
Thurs., Jan. 12.
I started to work upstairs this morning and did a little. But Miss Willie Cresap came down and told me that Mrs. Vanice wanted me, so I went up. Mr. Vanice had died. He died at 9:30 this a.m. Mr. W. H. Wheeler, Dan OBrien, Will Isaac, Geo. Burruss and self laid him out. Then I sent a telegram, for Mrs. Vanice, to Mr. Coltrane in North Carolina, and I made all the other arrangements for her. Mr. Wheeler and I picked the burying place and had that all fixed. I wrote a letter for her, in this eves mail, to Mr. Coltrane. This has been a very gloomy day, drizzling rain part of the eve. Trade very light. Roads bad. I arranged for Frank Webster, Bob Dunlap, Walker Bure, and Forrest McDaniel to sit-up tonight. I came home at 6:30, tired and worn out. I did some writing and retired at 8:45 p.m.
Fri., Jan. 13.
Gloomy, gloomy.....still another gloomy day. Emma had to teach again for Miss Eva Miller. Trade today was very quiet. Mr. Lewis is here today. Mr. Milt Mayer was also here (although we did not buy from him). Old Mr. Vanice was buried this eve, at 3 p.m., at the Methodist graveyard. His funeral services were at the Church at 2 p.m. The Odd Fellows had an oyster supper tonight, at Mertens Hall. Emma and I were invited, but did not attend. It was very dark and disagreeable out tonight. I came home at 6:30 and remained. I wrote awhile on my book tonight, and then we retired at 9 p.m.
Sat., Jan. 14.
This has been a real pretty day. Trade, though, not very brisk. The roads are still bad, therefore people cant get in very well. I got, and mailed, a Miami News this eve, for Mrs. Vanice. I went down to see her this eve, late. Emma attended Church tonight at the Baptist Church. We got home early, and retired at 9:30 p.m. Bro. Creighton is not at all well, so he did not get to fulfill his appointment this time, for tomorrow at Saline....his first miss.
Sun., Jan. 15.
This has been a real pretty day, and a very pleasant day, too, it was! We both attended Sunday School and Church. This eve we made our first call down to see Emmas grandfather, Mr. David Vaughan, and Jim Vaughan and his frau. And then we took a walk up to the corner and back. Then we had a cold lunch and read awhile. We attended Church tonight at the Baptist Church. Mary phoned that she wanted to go with us, so she did.
Mon., Jan. 16.
This morning was real pretty and warm. I was up to Mrs. Vanices, also to Mrs. W. H. Wheelers and Bro. Creightons. This eve has been dark and gloomy. Trade was very quiet this eve. We made two window displays this eve and put out a big sign in each window. I wrote Miss Mary Burruss (for Emma) a note this morning. This is Enterpe Night at W. H. Wheelers. So Miss Mary came over and spent the night with us. We attended Church at the M. E. Church, then I went up to W. H. Wheelers with them. They met me at the Store. Miss Myn Casebolt came home with them, to also spend the night with Emma and Mary. We retired at 10:45 p.m.
Tue., Jan. 17.
Today has been very pretty, in part, but awful cold. Trade, though, very, very dull.....not many in town. We got our wallpaper samples in this eve. I will pick through them tomorrow, if nothing doesnt happen. I was up to see Bro. Creighton and Mrs. Vanice this a.m. The new Methodist preacher came today, Bro. Alton, from Independence. The Misses Greenabaum came over tonight and went to Church with us. Dont forget how I sold Caddie, etc.! Cold, cold, cold tonight!
Wed., Jan. 18.
Mary has been real sick all day, so Lem did not get to Store, except for a little while this eve and that was when Emma went over to stay awhile. I have been busy going through wallpaper all day, picking out the spring-line. Trade very, very dull. The sun was only out for a little while today. It has been awful cold all day. Emma and I went over to the Doctors tonight, before supper, and had him vaccinate us both. He also vaccinated Cyrena, Kate, Angie, and himself. We then came home and spent the rest of the night to ourselves. Cyrena had a fine dish of popcorn for us tonight.
Thurs., Jan. 19.
This morning the sun was out a little while, but this eve it became cloudy. Trade awful, awful, awful quiet. This was the last day for Clarence to be with us. He quits tonight. He has been with us for a year today. Lem and I went through the wallpaper samples again this a.m. and, at last, have finished our spring selection. Emma and I went to Church tonight. Caddie Greenabaum came over and went with us. This is a real pretty night, moonlight bright and nice, not very cold.
Fri., Jan. 20.
Trade today very good, a $38 day. Emma and I were up to Mrs. Vanices this eve, and packed two trunks for her. George and I had a job cleaning upstairs this a.m., and also the back lot, at Store. We also got new sand for the stove at home, this a.m. Remember the time we had over a letter from Caddie Greenabaum tonight, of a bangle, and also the one I got of it, too! We all attended Church tonight.
Sat., Jan. 21.
This has been a partly cloudy, partly clear day. Though trade has been real nice. A good many have been in town today. The roads are getting along fine. Lottie Greenabaum joined the Church tonight. Collections have been real good today. Mrs. Ella Vanice had her Sale today. I was up for awhile this eve and bought 55-cents worth.
Sun., Jan. 22.
I did not get up until 7 oclock this a.m. I helped Emma with her work, after doing mine. Emma was not at all well this a.m., so she did not attend Sunday School or Church. I did, though. We had communion this a.m., after service. We have had company all evening. I started a letter to Rettie, but did not get to finish it. Mary and Doll Burruss came over this eve and took supper with us. They stayed until Church so we all went to Church together. Big crowd out. We did not have any service at our Church tonight. Lem and Mary were here this eve. The sun was only out a short while today.
Mon., Jan. 23.
This has been a gloomy day, all day. It was spitting snow all eve, but it melted as it fell. Trade today very, very quiet. We marked up all of our hamburgs and laces this eve, that came in on Sat. night. I attended to some business for Mrs. Vanice this eve. I paid out $60.20 for her, which included all that she owed in town. Emma and I attended Church tonight. Maude Burns also came over and went with us. It is clear and cold tonight. I was at W. H. Wheelers twice today, to see Mrs. Vanice. Mrs. Vanice gave me Mr. Vanices cane and some other things.
Tue., Jan. 24.
This has been one real pretty day, sure! Sun out and pretty and bright all day. Trade very nice. I invoiced Dr. Wheelers wallpaper today. We may buy it, but dont know yet if we will or not. Mr. Milt Burns fixed our pump for us tonight. Emma, Cyrena, and I all attended Church tonight. I attended to some business for Mrs. Vanice today. I was up to see her at Mrs. Wheelers this eve, also at Mrs. Creightons tonight. Old Mrs. Dobbins died this morning.
Wed., Jan. 25.
This has been quite a pretty day, trade fair. Mrs. Ella Vanice left us this a.m., for Marshall, and then on to Concord, No. Carolina. I fixed up teaspoons, knives, forks, and tablespoons, and sent them away for Mrs. Vanice this a.m. I also wrote a letter to Rettie this a.m. and sent her a package, samples of dress goods. We, Myers Bros., bought A. A. Wheeler out of his wallpaper business today. We (Emma and I) got us a crokinole board today and I brought it over tonight as I came to supper. I put in the woodhouse today, at noon, a cord and a half of wood. Emma and I attended the M. E. Meeting. It closed tonight.
Thurs., Jan. 26.
A real pretty day, but very cool. I cut samples of all lace and hamburgs in the house today, for a book Lem is making for stock. Geo. wound all the new lace. Trade dull....dullest....$5. No one in town. I sent Mrs. Vanices trunks away to Marshall today. Her spoons, forks, and knives away also. Mr. Joshua C. Reynolds took dinner with us today. Emma and I played on our new board tonight, for the first time. She beat me two out of three. The Methodists closed their Meeting last night and the Baptists took it up tonight.
Fri., Jan. 27.
Another real pretty day. Trade, though, very light. Still, we have been busy all day. Mr. Bishops grandson, Walter Stevenson, was buried here this eve. He was brought from Westport today, on the noon train. Old Mrs. Woolem died, too, this a.m. Emma has a very sore arm now, from being vaccinated. Mine has not yet taken effect. Emma and I, also the two Misses Greenabaums, and Mary, all attended Church tonight. Lovely, lovely night, but very cold.
Sat., Jan. 28.
The sun was out for about an hour and a half, then very dark and snow began to fall. In one hour and ten minutes, 1-inch of snow fell. It let up for one hour and forty-five minutes, then began again and the wind with it, and another 3/4 fell. Hardly any trade at all. Very, very few in town. I pasted quite a good many pieces in my scrapbook this p.m. I came home early, at 6:15 p.m. I had supper and commenced playing games on our new board with the two Misses Greenabaums, and Emma, and we played from 7 to 10:30. Had a hot time! O!.. It is awful cold tonight. Bro. Creightons niece came to Mr. Burruss this a.m., at 12 oclock, but, on account of the ice in the River, couldnt cross.
Sun., Jan. 29.
We got up this a.m. at 7 oclock. Lovely morning, but 6-degrees below zero. Remember the time Emma and I had in getting breakfast on the gas stove......also what we had, at last, to eat!! O!.. My!... These times on cold, cold mornings! No! Neither one of us attended Sunday School. It was after 10 oclock before we got the breakfast dishes washed. Papa is 71-years-old today. Emma and I attended Church tonight. The Baptist Meeting closed tonight.
Mon., Jan. 30.
This has been a very, very cold day.....also cloudy all day. Trade you might say, nothing, hardly. Lem was at the River twice today. He got, he thinks, a very good place for us to get ice about Wednesday or Thursday, if it keeps on getting colder. I commenced on a wallpaper rack today. I got along very nicely on it. It nothing prevents, I will get it done tomorrow. I swept my side of the Store tonight. Got our meat for tomorrow and came home early tonight, as it was so cold. Emma did not attend her Enterpe Meeting, which met at Miss Clara Kiles. So we both remained at home.....and remember the night it was, too!
Tue., Jan. 31.
This has been an extremely cold day. Trade awful quiet. Very few around town. Mr. Jackson is putting up ice, but it is awful dirty. Rettie Greenabaum is 18-years-old today. She and Jess Wheeler were over tonight and we played games until after 10 oclock. I finished my wallpaper rack this eve. Lem helped me get it done by dressing some few strips for me. It is a 35-hold rack and only cost us 5-cents to put it there. I want to paint it tomorrow. My arm began to get sore this morning, (from my vaccination) and is awful sore tonight.
