In the Miami News, February 2001:

MR. AND MRS. W. S. MYERS ENTERTAIN

The party at "Clover Cottage," the cozy home of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Myers, last Friday evening, was one of the largest of the season. It was given complimentary to Mr. George L. Burruss, who will return soon to the Klondike. Mr. and Mrs. Myers have the happy faculty of making everyone of their guests feel at home, and their entertainment on this occasion was characteristic of their hospitality. Mrs. Dr. Cunningham and the Misses Wheeler assisted them.
Among the many diversions arranged for the pleasure of the guests were two which were especially interesting, the nut cracking contest and the silhouette contest. In the former the letters contained in the names of various nuts were hopelessly out of place, and it was the object of the contestant to arrnage them in their proper order. Miss Ella Parrish excelled in this, and she was rewarded with a box of whole nuts. George Burruss was the least successful, and a small parcel of cracked nuts was the fitting prize awarded to him in consolation. In the second contest the shadows of the young ladies were thrown successively upon a curtain, and it was the pleasant task of the gentlemen to identify them. John P. Burruss knew the greatest number, and George W. Wilson failed even to recognize Mrs. Wilson!
The party had just become absorbed in the fascinating old game of charades, when someone, too circumspect, noted that Saturday morning was well advanced. That one will be fortunate who is invited to another such entertainment "over on the other hill."

DAVID VAUGHAN

David Vaughan, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Miami, died at his home in this city at 11:55 a.m. Wednesday, September 11, 1901, aged 78 years, 26 days. Mr. Vaughan had been in failing health for several years and his death Wednesday was not unexpected.
David Vaughan was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on August 16, 1823. On November 13, 1845 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Hardesty, near Lexington, Ky. To this union twelve children were born, of whom three, James F., Ruth (Mrs. Joshua Reynolds), of Miami, and Date (Mrs. L.H. Woodson), of Carrollton, together with 30 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren survive. Mrs. Vaughan died July 28, 1897 at the age of 70 years, 4 days.
In the year 1852 Mr. Vaughan came from Kentucky to Missouri and located at Miami. Since that time, except for short intervals, he has been a merchant here. At the time of his death he was engaged with James F. Vaughan in the lumber and implement business under the firm name of Vaughan & Son, but for more than a year he has not been able to give personal attention to the business.
On June 4, 1855, Mr. Vaughan united with the Christian Church and took an active part in the work of that organization until incapacitated by ill health. He was a man of more than ordinary attainments, and, as elder, frequently occupied the pulpit at the Christian Church.
Mr. Vaughan was one of a few men of the peioneer type whose interests have been identified with those of this city for so many years. Scarcely a half-dozen now remain. Their long years of usefulness have earned them a venerable place in the community, and the passing of one of them is the occasion of sincere regret.
Funeral services were conducted by Elder J. M. Crockett at the Christian Church yesterday afternoon, and interment was at the Christian cemetery two miles south of town. A large concourse of friends were assembled to pay last tribute of respect to the dead.

HANNA-AUDSLEY

The marriage of Mr. John Morgan Hanna and Miss Allie Irene Audsley was celebrated at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Audsley, 6 miles east of Miami, at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 19, 1901. Elder R. L. Wilson, of Slater, performed the ceremony.
This was a very pretty wedding. About one-hundred and sixty guests were present. The spacious house was lighted throughout with shaded cnadles, and decorated with palms, potted plants, ferns, and cut-flowers. The latter were bound with satin ribbons, pink and white being the prevailing colors.
The bride and groom stood beneath a bell, fashioned of roses and chrysanthemums, caught with white satin lovers' knots. They were attended by Miss Bertha Sullivan, maid of honor, and Mr. M. L. Francis, of Sharon, best man. Miss Daisy Powell, of Ayres, and Miss Mayne Casebolt were bridesmaids. Miss Gussie Edmonds played Mendelsohn's "Wedding March" as the party entered the parlor, and "The Flower Song," subdued, during the ceremony.
Miss Audsley wore a beautiful gown of white taffeta silk, draped with chiffon and pearl trimmings. Her hair was handsomely coiffured and caught with a diamond brooch, the gift of the groom. The maid of honor and bridesmaids were becomingly attired in white crepe de chene, silk mulle, and Persian lawn.
In the dining room decorations similar to those of the parlors were carried out with even more beautiful effect. Here the guests were invited to an elegant course dinner. The bride found five double-eagles, the gift of her father, concealed in the folds of her napkin. She was the recipient of many other handsome and costly presents.
During the afternoon the Miami Band, of which the groom was formerly a member, discourse sweet music on the lawn.
Mr. and Mrs. Hanna took the evening train at Slater for Kansas City, where they will be at home for the present.
The bride is one of the most popular girls of this community. The groom is the son of Judge and Mrs. R. C. Hanna and a young man of sterling worth. Many friends wish them a long and prosperous married life.
