Rules and Regulations of the York Methodist Episcopal Sunday School

York - April 24, 1830

1st That no class shall consist of more that eight scholars.

2nd. That the greatest number of verses from either the Scriptures or Hymns best learned and best recited, shall entitle the Scholar so learning and so reciting, to stand at the head of his or her Class, and so on in succession according to the verses or hymns learned.

3rd. Unless the Scholars first recite the lesson of the the day correctly, they shall not be allowed to recite any other verses.

4th. Every six verses well learned and well recited shall entitle any Scholar to a white ticket, and every ten white tickets so gained to a red one, and this red ticket shall entitle such Scholar to a book from the library for perusal, to be kept for the space of one or two weeks, but not longer than two.

5th. It shall be the duty of the Teacher to return all books brought in by the Scholars, to the Secretary when called on by him.

6th. In giving out books, the Teachers shall see that the children under their care do not stir from their seats until their class is called up by the Secretary, when the books will be given without that confusion which otherwise arrises.

7th. It shall be the duty of every Teacher to take care that every book taken from the library by any one of his or her Scholars, be duly restored to the Secretary at the proper time.

8th. It shall be the duty of every Teacher immediately on entrance into the School to proceed to, and remain at the head or in front of his or her class, and diligently endeavour to keep the class employed until the School be closed.

9th. It shall be the duty of every Teacher, upon absence of any one of his or her Scholars, for the space of two Sundays, to go and enquire of the parents or guardians of said child the reason of his or her absence, and report the same to the President for consideration.

10th. It shall be the duty of the Teachers to attend when possible, the Teacher's Meeting held on Wednesday evenings, for the purpose of studying the lesson for the next Sabbath with greater advantage.

11. It shall be the duty not only of the Officers and Managers, but of the Teachers to endeavour to get subscriptions and donations in aid of the funds of the society, at the same time giving in to the Secretary the names of the subcribers or donars with the amount paid, to be handed by him to the Treasurer, that he may enter their names in his book of subcriptions and donations.

12th. If any Teacher absent him or herself unnecessarily from the School without being able to render to the Officers and Managers a satisfactory excuse, the same shall for the first absence be fined one shilling and three pence, for the second two shillings six pence, and for the third shall be expelled.

13th. It shall be the duty of the Secretary to keep a book with the Teachers names in it, to note down each Sunday whether they are absent or present.

14th. The fines shall be put to the same use as subscriptions or donations.

15th. If any Teacher shall at any time be reported to be guilty of immoral conduct, such as drunkenness, gaming, profane swearing, Sabbath breaking, etc., and shall by the Officers and Managers be found so, the same shall be immediately expelled.

16th. The School shall be opened precisely at two o'clock P.M. and be closed when practicable precisely at four.

A strict attention to the foregoing rules is expected from every person who has taken or may hereafter take upon him or herself the important duties of a Teacher in the School.
