BROWN, JAMES

James Brown (d.), b. Welland Co., 1799; d. 1874, age 75. He set. in Esquesing Tp.

He was School Trustee for a number of years, and a Liberal in politics. In religion he was a Methodist, and took an active part in church work.

He m. Mary Ann Haines, who d, 1887, age 76. There were eight children: Mrs. Sophia Cross, Alexander" David, James, John K., Mrs. W. Devereaux, William and Robert. Of these David was b. in Walton in 1836, and came to Arthur in 1860.

He set. on 100 acres, lot 24, O.S.R., where he carries on mixed -farming. He m. Mary Kerr, who came from Co. Tyrone, Ire., in 1842, and lived in the city of Baltimore until 19 years old. They had four children: William J., in Oregon; Robert G., Mrs. John Craig, in Arthur, and Mrs. E. W. Cameron, who lives on the homestead, and has two children: Ena P. and Mary C. .

Mr. Brown served for five years in the Council, five years Deputy Reeve, and two years as Reeve of Arthur Tp.
