DAWSON, SOLOMAN

Soloman Dawson son of Joseph Dawson, who was b. in Eng. in 1784, and came to E. Flamboro in 1832. He had two sons, Robert and Soloman.

Soloman, b. Lincolnshire, Eng., Oct. 10, 1829, where he was brought up and received a good education. He came to Canada in 1848, and spent the first three years in Hamilton. In 1851 he purchased 50 acres, lot 13, con. 12, Flamboro, a bush farm which he cleared and improved. This farm contained pine timber of a fine quality and it yielded a large sum to Mr. Dawson. In fact he made most his money in E. Flamboro, getting out square timber, which he supplied for the G.T.R. bridges between Guelph and Harrisburg.

In 1872, he came to Guelph Tp. and purchased Div. A. lots 28 and 29, and later retired to Guelph city, where he is passing his declining years. His life has been a successful one, having started poor and attained through his own industry, enterprise and good management a competency.

Mr. Dawson has been a member of the Methodist church for over sixty years. In politics he is a strong Conservative, and has always taken an active interest in the political questions of the day. He was an Alderman in Guelph City three years.

In 1848 he m. Sarah Lakings, and they had the following issue: Mrs. James Ingalls, Mrs. Geo. Shortreed, John, Henry, Walter, Robert, Mrs. N. Smith, Mrs. Benj. Freure, Christopher and William, all b. in Flamboro. He m. for his second wife, Mrs. Simpson, nee Margaret Miller. No issue.

John, b. 1853, m. Margaret McQuillan. He is a foreman in the furniture factory at Jamestown, N.Y.

Henry, b. l804, m. Louise Steele, and set. in Guelph Tp. where he owns and lives on his farm of 150 acres near the city. He is a pushing, energetic man and successful. He has been Councillor since 1902. Issue: William H., George, Gladys and Grace. Walter. b. 1856, m. Mary Rudd, and settled in Guelph City, where he is a successful business man, and a member of the firm of McLean and Dawson, machinists and electricians. Issue: Edgar and Edith.

Robert, m. Mary J. Cooling, and owns the old homestead of 160 acres, in Guelph, where he resides and carries on successful farming. Issue: Linnie, Alfred and Greta. William, m. Ada Beasley. He is a foreman of a large furniture factory in Detroit. Issue: Pearl, Vera and Divina.

Christopher, b. 1865, m. Isabella Fraser. Issue: John, Olive, Winnie, Ada, Basil and Earl. He is a manager of the buildings and grounds of the Home and Sanitarium in the city of Guelph. For three years he served with E. D. Smith, Winona, in the nursery and horticultural business, gaining a thorough knowledge of same. He was engaged four years in the care of the parks of Guelph City.
