FISHER, ALEXANDER

Alexander Fisher was born in Scotland in 1807, and died in 1890 at age 83. He was a Quarter Master Sergeant of the 97th Regiment for 3 years, and came to Canada in 1839, in that capacity, resigning a short time after arriving in the country, with an annual pension of 50 pounds.

He was an educated man, and had considerable means, when with his two brothers, John and Michael, he came to Peel Tp., in 1839, where they purchased 600 acres of land near Creek Bank. and there settled being among some of the very first settlers in the township.

The Fishers were noted for their hospitality, and the early settlers on their way to the territory to the north of them always found a hospitable welcome at the Fisher home.

Alexander Fisher was a Methodist, and a Liberal, and never sought or held office,. He married Martha Magee, b 1828 and died age 76. in 1904. Issue: Richard, John C., Arthur W., Albert, Mrs. Meyers, Mrs. Wm. Leach, Mrs. James Street, and Adeline; all born on the Peel farm.

Of his family, Richard. a graduate of Toronto School of Medicine, is a practising physician at Wiarton.

John, owns 100 acres, lot 20, con. 11, Peel Tp., where he carries on mixed farming. He is a Liberal and a Methodist. He married Ann M. Day. Issue: Charles E., Ethel, Claris, and Myrtle.

Arthur W. married Miss Eva Ryan of Oakville. She is a medical doctor, and practices her profession at Arthur. Albert is a graduate of Queen's University Medical Branch, and practices in Brigden, where he is a leading man.

The late John Fisher married Flora McClennan in the Lochiel Church, Glengarry Co., and came, a pioneer with his bride, to Arthur Twp. They had nine children, five born on the Arthur farm, and four after the family came to Minto. Five of the children are still living, viz. Andrew, William, Joseph, a successful representative of Massey, Harris Co., in the N.W.; Elizabeth, the wife of Major F. F. Manley Principal of the Jarvis St. Collegiate Institute. Toronto; James, who was with the Canadian Contingent in South Africa, now a resident of the N.W.

Only the two of the sons live in Minto Tp., viz: Andrew and William. �

Andrew, born in Arthur Sept. 1, 1846, was only eight years old when the family came to Minto, and has experienced all of the vicissitudes of pioneer life. By the death of his father, be was early thrown on his own resources but he had inherited a good constitution, and had been accustomed to overcoming obstacles. He was a ambitious to succeed, and feeling the responsibility thus placed upon him, went at it with a will, and is to-day, one of the most prosperous and respected citizens of Minto. In politics he is a strong Liberal. He has held the office of School Trustee for many years, and was on of the first elected members of the newly formed Board of Education for High and Public Schools ' He is a Worshipful Master of Harriston, Blue Lodge, No. 262., A.F. and A.M., and First Principal of Enterprise Chapter. No. 67, Royal, Arch. Masons, for the year 1906. He is interested in the dairy industry, and has been director an salesman of the Harriston Cheese and Butter Mfg. Co., for several years.

He first married Susanna Bond, and second, Margaret Clark. Issue Samuel J., in business in Alberta; Joseph A., James A., Mary, an Margaret, at home.

William, was born on the Minto homestead, and brought up there after finishing school, he learned the carriage making and blacksmithing business in Harriston, and later went into the business in Harriston, with Donald Smith, under the firm name of Smith and Fisher. They are the leading firm in their line in Harriston. Mr. Fisher is a staunch Liberal, and takes an active interest in municipal affairs. He has been a member of the Harriston Council for seven years, and is very popular. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, Odd Fellows and Royal Arcanum. He married Annie B. Forbes of Woodstock, and has one son, Forbes L.
