HENDERSON, JOHN A.

John A. Henderson was born Esquesing Tp., 1848. His father set. in Esquesing in 1843. His mother was Jane Klink, who was b. at Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and came to Canada with her parents, Stephen and Christina Klink, who drew 300 acres in Erin Co., under the proclamation granting land to the U. E. L. Mrs. Henderson's grandfather, Stephen Klink, introduced the first fall wheat into Erin Township, carrying two bushels on his back from Stony Creek. The Klinks were the third family to settle in Erin.

Mr. Henderson's father and mother have been d. some years, and are buried in the Ballinfad Cemetery on the line between Erin and Esquesing. There were six children in the family: Simon, West Garafraxa; John A., Mrs. Newman, Man.; Mrs. Fred Near, Esquesing; David (d. young), and Robert, on the old homestead.

John A. Henderson purchased his homestead in 1878, and with the exception of twenty acres has cleared and improved it to its present condition. In all, his hard and laborious past his wife has been a true and useful helpmeate. The fine modern residence, with commodious barns and outbuildings, together with the highly tilled fields and orchards, all attest the industry and prosperity of one of Garafraxa's representative settlers. To the original 100 acres has been added 150 acres, and 290 acres in East Luther the latter of which he has bestowed upon his sons, James and william.

Mr. Henderson has been largely identified with the public life of the township and county, and has held the offices of Councillor, Deputy Reeve, Reeve, and Warden in 1900. At the last Conservative convention he was mentioned as one who would be well received if he contested the electorate for the Provincial Parliament.

In religion he is a Methodist. He has been an active temperance worker. Mrs. Henderson, who was a Miss Ellen Near, is a grandson of a U. E. L. who drew land in Erin Tp. under the proclamation.
