Norfolk Street The Ladies Aid Society
Sitting - Mrs. T.F. Savage, Mrs. W.A. Rapp The first indication of any regular organization of the ladies of the church is given in the early minute book, which refers to the forming of "The Guelph Wesleyan Ladies Bazaar" about 1851-1852. One of the resolutions dated January 8th., 1855, was that no one be admitted to the Society under fourteen years of age. Another worthy of mention was passed on the 3rd. of March, 1857: "Resolved, that any lady belonging to the Aid Society telling any conversation that may pass in any of the meetings detrimental to them or the said Society, shall, upon it being proven, be expelled from it." Also, that any lady wishing to bring in a new member must bring her name before the meeting, and if there were any objections they must then be balloted for. The membership fee was 1 shilling and in 1858 ten members names were recorded From the proceeds of a bazaar held in December, 1858 money was given to the trustees of the church towards the building fund. In the early days socials were held nearly every month from which a large sum was realized. Throughout the years the Ladies' Aid was a source of help and strength to the officials and pastors of the church, having raised over $18,900 (in 1936) for the building fund of the new church school, as well as necessary sums for the parsonage and other departments of church work. Their untiring efforts, their loyalty and devotion to the advancement of the Master's work have meant much to themselves and the church. In 1906 the membership was twenty-four.
