NORRIS, HENRY

NORRIS Family . The founder of this family in Canada was the late Michael Norris. He was b. Co. Kerry, Ire., and came to Canada with his family in 1831, settling first near Caledonia, where he died. He m. Elizabeth Day, who d. 1871, age 80. They were members of the Methodist church, and in politics he was a Conservative. Issue: John, Henry, Michael, Jr.; William, in Chicago; Mrs. James Greenley, Eliza (d. unm., age 67), Mrs. Wm. Bailey and Esther (d. unm, age 57). The family came to Peel Tp. in 1845, with the Days, and were among the first to settle on the 10th line, where they have been successful citizens ever since.

John, the eldest son, was b. in 1811. He never married, and became a successful and influential citizen of the township. He was a zealous member of the Methodist church, and a liberal contributor to church and every worthy object. He passed away in 1887.

Henry, b. 1819; d. in 1895. He m. Rebecca Berry, who still survives. Issue: Mrs. Henry Mansfield, William, Michael T., Mrs. E. Waind, Henry J., Richard D., Leslie, and Fanny. He was a man of strict integrity and a good citizen. Of his issue: William lives on the old homestead, which he owns. He m. Eliza Close. Issue: Estella, William and Forestine. He is a member of the Methodist church, and in politics a Liberal.

Michael T., b. on the old homestead, owns a waggon and carriage shop at Goldstone, which he has successfully carried on since 1882. He is a sterling citizen, a well read man, and occupies an honorable place in the community. He m. Almeda Hamilton, of the old York pioneer family of that name. Issue: Cecil M., Howard C., Edna R. and Marjorie A.

Henry J. is a farmer near Hamilton.
Richard D. m. Minnie Broley, and is a druggist in Toronto.
Leslie is a druggist in New York City.

Michael, Jr., was b. in Co. Kerry, Ire., in 1822, and d. in 1904. He m. Susanna Godfrey in 1847, who still survives him. Issue: Mrs. Jos. West, Luther; John, Thomas, William G., Joseph G., Robert P., Mrs. Samuel Hill, Mrs. Jeremiah Skerratt, Mrs. John Cragg and Mrs. John Boyle. The late Michael Norris, Jr., was a representative citizen in all that the phrase implies. He was particularly active in church matters, and held most of the offices in the Methodist church. As a farmer he was successful, and as a neighbor had the respect of the whole community. Of his family: John was b. on the old homestead in 1849, and has always lived in the township, with the exception of one year, which he has spent in Illinois. He m. Margaret E. Sturtridge. Issue: Mrs. Wm. Gurr, Mrs. Richard Day, Emily M. and Susanna J. He owns 100 acres, lot 9, west half con. 11, where he resides, and carries on mixed farming. He is a member of the Methodist church, and in politics a Liberal.

Thomas m. Mary A. Groves, and is a successful farmer in Egremont.

William G. became a pioneer in Manitoba in 1882, where he resided for twenty years, and was very successful. He sold out his farm there in 1902, and returned to Peel Tp., where he purchased 200 acres, lot 14, con. 8, where he resides. He m. Margaret McLellan.

Joseph G., b. Goldstone, Peel Tp., 1866. He was educated at Goldstone. At seventeen years of age he learned the tailoring trade, and worked at it for some thirteen years, being in business in Drayton for some time. He then bought a farm in Peel Tp., which he sold and purchased 170 acres in Egremont, which he farmed for some years. In 1906 he sold this property and purchased the business of the general store and postoffice at Farewell, Arthur Tp., where he is now carrying on a successful business. He is a Methodist, and a Liberal. In 1891 he m. Louisa Goodland. Issue: Stanley, Calvert, Inez, Merlin and Elmer.

Robert P. m. Myrtle Boyce; set. on 100 acre homestead. Issue: Eveline, Harold and Muriel.
