SCOTT, WILLIAM W.

William W. Scott Jr., of Moorefield, is the son of the late William W. Scott, Sr, and the grandson of the late John Scott. The latter was b. in Jedburgh, Scot., in 1786, and d. in 1855. He came to Canada in the employ of the Hudson Bay Co., going to the N.W. early in 1800, and remaining there some years.

He came to Ontario and purchased a large tract of land in Darlington Tp., where he set. when the township was new. He was an educated man, and taught school in Darlington, as well as being Tp. Clerk for many years. He m. Mary Wilson, and had a family of seven children -- of whom the late Walter, of Darlington; John W., banker in Listowel, and late William W., Sr., were sons. The latter was b. in Darlington in 1824, and d. in 1903. He was raised and educated there and become a school teacher as well as a farmer, teaching in Darlington for over twenty years. Like his father, he was a man of strong individuality and force of character, and was very successful. He was a member of the Meth. church. and active in church matters, being Supt. of Sabbath School for years. He m. Mary J. Holden. Issue: William W., Jr.; Elgin R., a leading man in Palmerston; Sarah J., Georgina M., Frederick J., Annie D., Elizabeth and Ada Julia.

William W. Scott, Jr., was born in Darlington, and came to W. Wananosh, in 1871. He m. Sarah Penfound. Issue: Mrs. Carson Henderson, Mrs. Victor Lewis, Elgin J., William W., Mary J., Simon, and Lloyd L.

Mr. Scott came to Maryborough in 1885, and owns 250 acres of land, which is farmed by his son, while he is living retired at Moorefield. He has taken a leading part in Maryborough as well as in W. Wananosh, being Deputy Reeve of the former, Councillor some years, and School Trustee 12 years. He is Township Clerk of Maryborough, also Police Magistrate. He has been a local preacher in the Methodist church for over twenty-five years, and a choir leader for thirty-six years. He has given his children, two of whom are school teachers, good educations. He is a leading and representative citizen.
