SNYDER, JACOB

Jacob Snyder is a son of the late Henry Snyder, who came to Canada from New Jersey, in the last century. Jacob was b. in Beamsville, Ont. in 1803, and d. 1882, age 79. He came to Erin in 1830, and moved to Esquesing in 1844. He was a strong sympathizer in the Rebellion of 1837-8, and was also an ardent Liberal. He was a quiet, unassuming man, always a kind friend, a good neighbor and liberal to the poor. No man stood higher in the opinion of the community. He was Assessor, and also Collector in Erin. In early life he was a Congregationalist, but in later years affiliated with the Methodists, and with his wife took an active part in church work.

He m. Mary Zimmerman, who was b. 1806, and d. 1882, age 76. Issue: Isaac, Adam, Mt. Forest; Robert, Acton; Mrs. John McConnell, Man.; Mrs. Samuel Stauffer, Mich.; William, Station Master, Elora; Eli, Parkdale; Henry (d.), Man.; Mrs. John Steincke, Grand Rapids, and Mrs. Robert Gibbons, Acton, and Mrs. Hiram Stauffer (d.), Mich.

Isaac Snyder, b. 1830, township of Gainsborough, came to Erin in infancy, 7 months old, with his father. He lived with his father until 1855, when he received from him a small sum of money, and bought the east half of lot 6, con. 3, Erin, and shortly after bought the other half of the land. Later he purchased the old homestead from his parents, and as a result of his industry has been enabled to assist all of his sons to farms.

He has taken a great interest in church and temperance work, and has never tasted liquor or used tobacco, and the same applies to all of his sons. He was a prime mover in the movement of the erection of Siloam Methodist Church, his wife seconded the first resolution he proposed in committee in favor of its building.

He was a Sabbath School Superintendent for many years, also class leader and Trustee, which positions he still holds. In 1855 he m. Elizabeth Leslie, who d. in 1901, age 68. Issue: Jacob (d.), James E. Mrs. Fred Stewart, set. Saltfleet; Sarah (d.), John W. (d.), David W., George H. and Margaret Ellen.

James E., b. 1857, owns 110 acres in Esquesing. He m. Olive Griffin. Issue: Mrs. Fred. Lawn, Acton; William and Irene.

John W., b. 1866 , set. in Esquesing, and was killed in 1900 by the cars in Toronto. He m. Sophia Stauffer. Issue: Margaret Sophia and Annie Foster.

David W., b. 1868, resides in Brampton. He m. Priscilla Denham in Caledon. Issue: Louis H., Pearl, Earl, and Gladys.
