Bethel Methodist Church

Bethel Methodist Church was a frame structure erected about 1858, on the north corner of the Thomas Atchison farm, E 1/2 lot 24, con 6. In 1888 Bethel Church was moved without being torn down. It was loaded on sets of sleighs, and taken to the east corner of E 1/2 lot 26 con 4, the farm then owned by John Carey. It was joined by the Methodists from the Povey Church on lot 29, on 3rd line.

Regardless of its location, Bethel Methodist Church was on a charge with Carmel, and later with Carmel and Belwood, with the ministers living in Belwood after 1886. Bethel Church remained active until October 1924, when it was sold to the Orangemen at Arthur. It was torn down and used to build their Orange Hall on Frederick Street.

Most of the Bethel members joined the Metz congregation, with a few going to Arthur Methodist Church, and others joining Carmel, until Church Union in June 1925, when Metz received the Bethel Members from Carmel.

Belwood Methodist Church

The Wesleyan Methodists in Garafraxa were first under the supervision of the minister of the Erin Circuit, and outside appointments were taken by students at Marsville, at Cotton's School on lot 10, con 10, and at Douglas, now Belwood. The supervising minister dispensed Communion, baptised babies, and presided at Quarterly Board Meetings. The group at Cotton's School built their church, "Little Heaven", across the road on the Harold Woods farm.

First Methodist services at Belwood were held in the home of James Robinson or in the barn of peter Crouse. It is reported that the first Methodist Church in the village was a small log chuch located south of the river, on the west side of th 7th line, about where the C.P.R. tracks pass toward the old station.

About 1860, a lot was purchased on Upper Broadway, from the surveyors, for a Methodist Church. The stone church was was built just south of the school grounds and opened in 1863. It had a pine floor, pine seats and ceiling of varnished wood. It was lighted by a chandelier of coal oil lamps which were blown out with the use of a long tin pipe. Heat was provided by two large box stoves. The orignial door and windows were straight across the top, but were altered to give a Gothic effect more suitable for church architecture.

There was cement platform outside the front door. A driveway separated the church from the house on the lot to the south, and led to the shed at the back where space was provided for horses, cutters, buggies or democrats.

Services were discontinued at Cotton's School after 1863, when the stone church was built in Belwood. Between 1865-1870, the Methodist circuits were re-organized, and Belwood had its own charge with a resident minister. Other preaching points were Marsville at Price's Corners and Stacey's on W 1/2 lot 15 con 5, the meeting place for the Green Settlement.

In 1884, Bethel and Carmel Methodist Churches joined the Belwood Charge, and reached its highest membership by 1905. Belwood Methodist Church celebrated its 60th Anniversary in 1923, and continued in use until Church Union was consumated in 1925, when the members joined with St. John's. The Methodist Church was used for small meetings from 1925-1935, then dismantled.

Carmel Methodist Church

Carmel congregation dates back to a Mission held prior to 1851. It has been said that the Methodist Episcopals at Carmel were the first on the ground in Garafraxa, probably as early as 1846. Methodism came in two varieties: The Episcopal Methodists introduced in Canada by the U.E.L.'s from the United States and the Wesleyan Methodists who were the pioneers from the British Isles.

On August 12, 1851 the Episcopal Methodists purchased a lot from Lawrence Monkman for their log church and parsonage. Carmel cemetery was established across the road at lot 15 east side of the 6th line.

Carmel Cemetery was started on the east side of the road, and a log parsonage was built on the west side of the road on land purchased from Caleb Travis.

The log church and school were built in 1864. When the new stone Methodist Church was erected in 1872 complete with balcony, it was in the "churchyard". When Church Union came in 1925, Carmel Methodist Church was closed. In 1939, the church was demolished, but the original front step of the church was left in place, to form the front step of the Memorial Chapel.

Povey's Methodist Church

Earliest religious services were held at Metz in the log school, built in 1865, on the stone corner. The ministers were usually Methodist, and soon a log Methodist Church was built on the south corner of W 1/2 lot 29, con 4, 3rd. line, as shown on the 1877 Atlas map.

They joined Bethel Methodist Church in 1888, when it was moved bodily from the Dracon area, E 1/2 lot 24, con 6, to the west corner of 4th line and 25 sideroad.

Two organists were remembered at Bethel: Mrs. James E. Ferrier, and Etta Bell, later Mrs. Alonso Howes.

Victoria Methodist Church

Earliest church services were held in the homes and in the store at Hereward. On February 23, 1869, George Robson sold 2200 sq. ft. of land to the Episcopal Methodists. The frame church was built on W 1/2 lot 15 con 11, East Garafraxa, near the top of the hill just east of the 10th. line corner. The church was painted white, and beside it were two sheds for horses.

Victoria Methodist Church was on the Orton Charge after the Orton Church was built in 1901. Before that, it was liked with the Grove Methodist Church which stood in the churchyard, now the Grove Cemetery at the corner of 12th line lot 1.

In 1922 the church was closed due to small attendance and finacial income.
