WRIGHT, GEORGE

George Wright was b. Co. Tyrone, Ire., 1809, d. age 82. He came to Canada in 1832 and settled first at Campbellville, in Halton Co., where he remained some years working in McCann's mills.

He was then attracted by the cheap lands in Arthur Tp., and came up and purchased 50 acres lot 11 O.S.R., from the Crown and an additional 50 acres from a settler. Not a stick had been cut on it, and he put up his shanty and began pioneer life. Their nearest mill was Fergus, where they procured all of their provisions, and it used to take a week to get there and back with the grist, which was often from frozen wheat. For some years he went down to Halton Co. in the harvest time to make money to purchase supplies.

Mr. Wright kept the Arthur homestead 19 years, when he sold out and purchased a place in Normanby, where he resided until his death. Mr. Wright took a part in all the affairs of the early settlers of Arthur To., and he was in the first Council and continued in the office for years. For many years he was a class leader and Trustee in the Methodist church. In politics he was a Conservative. In 1828 he m. Margaret Adams, who d. in 1876. Issue: Samuel (d. 74), Martha (d. young), John, retired in Mount Forest; George, N.W.T.; Mrs. Charles Weir, Mich.; Henry (d.), Mrs. John McBride and Jane, Mich.

Of these John b. 1833, took up 100 acres of bush land in Normanby, which he cleared, and after nineteen years sold it and purchased 200 acres in Arthur Tp., lot 2 con. 8. This he worked until 1903, when he sold it for $8,000 and retired to Mount Forest. Mr. Wright started without means, and became successful and much respected. He has never sought or held municipal office. In 1861 he m. Margaret Stewart, b. Ire., 1839. Issue: Mrs. Robert Jackson, George and James, N.W.T.; Stewart, G.T.R.; David, Stratford; Mary, at home; Edward, Philadelphia, and Mrs. Frank Palmer, N.Y.

Henry was b. Halton Co., 1838, d. Jan 4th, 1904, age 66. He came to Normanby when a young man and took up a bush farm. He had very little means and was obliged to struggle hard to make both ends meet. He, however, cleared his farm, and improved it. In 1878 he sold his Normanby property and purchased the present homestead of 100 acres lot 2,, con. 12, Arthur. Mr. Wright was a man of retiring disposition, preferring his home to the distractions of public life. He raised and educated his large family, starting all of them out well fitted for life. He took a very active interest in all church work In 1894 he retired to Mount Forest, where he resided until his death. In 1861 he m. Maria Rainy, who survives him. Issue: William and Arthur, Kingsley, Mich.; Albert, Mrs. VanZandt, Hemlock, N.Y.; George and Mrs. Smyth, Winnipeg, and Marshall.

Marshall, b. Normanby, 1889; has always loved on the farm. He purchased the homestead in 1896 from his father, and carries on mixed farming successfully. He was Township Constable one year and has been County Constable several years. He is much respected, and is a Methodist and a Conservative, In 1904 h m.
