Note - between 844 and 875: Louis II was crowned King of the Lombards (Italy) by Pope Sergius II in 844 and remained King until his death in 875. He became Emperor of the Occident on Easter Sunday in 850. Upon the death of his brother, Charles de Provence, Louis II's Kingdom is enhanced by Provence and the Northern part of Charles' Kingdom. When his remaing brother, Lothar II dies in 869, leaving no male heir, Louis II would have gotten the remaining lands, but his rights were strongly contested by his uncles Charles le Chauve and Louis le Germanique. In Italy, he fought with some success in alliance with the Papacy against the Sarracens from whom he took Bari. His daughter, Ermengarde, became Queen of Provence through her marriage with Boson. In June 1119 Henry I restored to him all his father's lands in Normandy. As has been pointed out, Eustachie was suggested by Charles Evans to be illegitimate daughter of Eustace, son of King Stephen. This conclusion was based on onomastics and kinship. Eustachie is specifically stated to have been a kinswoman of King Henry II, and is found in several modern sources as Eustachie of Champagne. Eustachie being the female form of Eustace, Evans argued that the only time that Eustace/Eustachie was associated with Champagne was following the marriage of King Stephen to Matilda of Boulogne, daughter of Eustace III of Boulogne. The problem with this is that I have traced back her being called Eustachie "of Champagne", and cannot find anything contemporary that calls her this. Where does it come from, then? (One possibility is that this somehow derived from a misunderstanding regarding the nickname of her husband, Anselme 'Campdaveine'.) If "de Champagne" is non-contemporary, then the primary reason for attaching her to the Champagne/Boulogne family disappears.

It is in this context that we can view the suggestion of Kathleen Thompson, (apparently again based on onomastics and kinship), that Eustachie was daughter of William Gouet (III) by his wife Mabel. This would make her, on her father's side, granddaughter of Eustachie, wife of William Gouet (II), explaining her given name, and on her mother's side, granddaughter, through an illegitimate daughter Mabel, of King Henry I, making her (half-)first cousin of King Henry II. Thus this solution accounts for both the kinship and onomastics.

The take-home message here is that Evans based his conclusion on scant evidence, at least some of which appears to have been flawed. There is an alternative that explains the existing material at least as well, and doesn't require the invention of an illegitimate child of Eustace IV of Boulogne, otherwise thought to have d.s.p.

General Notes: Æthelwulf was the son of Egbert and a sub-king of Kent. He assumed the throne of Wessex upon his father's death in 839. His reign is characterized by the usual Viking invasions and repulsions common to all English rulers of the time, but the making of war was not his chief claim to fame. Æthelwulf is remembered, however dimly, as a highly religious man who cared about the establishment and preservation of the church. He was also a wealthy man and controlled vast resources. Out of these resources, he gave generously, to Rome and to religious houses that were in need.

He was an only child, but had fathered five sons, by his first wife, Osburga. He recognized that there could be difficulties with contention over the succession. He devised a scheme which would guarantee (insofar as it was possible to do so) that each child would have his turn on the throne without having to worry about rival claims from his siblings. Æthelwulf provided that the oldest living child would succeed to the throne and would control all the resources of the crown, without having them divided among the others, so that he would have adequate resources to rule. That he was able to provide for the continuation of his dynasty is a matter of record, but he was not able to guarantee familial harmony with his plan. This is proved by what we know of the foul plottings of his son, Æthelbald, while Æthelwulf was on pilgrimage to Rome in 855.

Æthelwulf was a wise and capable ruler, whose vision made possible the beneficial reign of his youngest son, Alfred the Great.

Note: Laurent Ohier has Roricon I & II as one person, d. 841, who married both Rotrude & Blichilde. I have him as two different persons. AR, I think would agree with me, in that Laurent has the daughter (I name her Blichilde) who married the count of Poitou as a daughter of Gauzlin (Gozlin), while AR has her as daughter of Roricon/Rorick.

Jim, you must have misread the chart. Laurent Ohier 4 Jul 1999 msg to SGM did not make Blichild dau of Gozlin. His chart does show her as the dau of Roric I & Blichilde.

My notes from ES I:2, ES II:76, Moriarty p26-7, Turton, Watney #14, Weis AR7 144a show your Roricon I & II are the same person & the descent agrees with Laurent Ohier’s chart as flws:

I said in my first post-em: "Jim, you must have misread the chart".

Oops, my bad!!! I was the one who misread the chart, not you. After re-reading the chart I see that you were referring to the dau of Gauzelin & Adeltrude: "N X. Rannoux I Ct de Poitou", & in the next generation there is a dau of Rorico I & Bichilde named "Bichilde X, Bernard Ct of Poitiers".

Moriarty p26-7 gives Bichilde dau of Roric & Bichilde marrying as her 1st husband Bernard Count of Poitou (Laurent Ohier making his toponym Poitiers is problematic) & m2 Ranulf Count of Poitou. The confusion comes from Weis AR7144a saying "Ranulf I & dau of Rorick" = her name is unknown. It gets even more confusing because ES II:76 says "Ranulk & N v Maine T v Gf Rorico II u Bilihildis" (meaning Ranulf & (?) of Maine, dau of Count Rorico II & Bichilde). Weis leaves it ambiguous & ES seems to bring a new wrinkle into play by calling her father Rorico II (although my notes show nothing about ES saying who Rorico I was). On the surface, my notes from ES seem to contradict Moriarty & Weis & confirm your 3 Roric/Rorick/Rorico/Roricon theory. I need to go back to ES & see if there's more detail. Unfortunately I'm not scheduled to go back to the library that has it until Jan. Also, I just remembered that there was something in Turton about this line too (worth a look-see eve!
n though unreliable). Ideally finding Laurent Ohier's source would be great, but I have my doubts that any of the libraries in my area have it. We'll see. In the meantime, I'll scout the net to see if there is anything that pertains to this problem.

At the time of his reign the Northmen were settled on the coast of Ireland and the coast of Gaul; they were masters of the sea; and from west and east alike they closed upon Britain. While one host from Ireland fell on the Scot kingdom north of the Firth of Forth, another from Scandinavia landed in 866 on the coast of East Anglia under Hubba and marched the next year upon York. Mercia was saved from the Norsemen by King Ethelred when he marched to Nottingham in 868, but it was only a brief respite. The Norsemen soon resumed their attacks. Scarcely had Egbert brought the Heptarchy under his overlordship (828) than England was attacked from both sides, the Norsemen having now gained a footing on the French coast also, while in the west the turbulent Welsh were ready to lend them a hand against the Saxon. At first mere hasty dashes with retreat before force could be gathered to stop them, by the middle of the century their inroads became more persistent from a fixed base; and, year after year, the curt Anglo-Saxon Chronicle has to tell how king or alderman was called to battle with such ravagers. [Leaders and Landmarks, Vol. II, p. 15]

When his father, Alckmund, was defeated, Egbert fled to Offa, king of Mercia; but when Offa gave his daughter Edburga in marriage to Beortric there was no longer safety for him with a king to whom treachery and assassination were familiar instruments of his will. Thus, he fled to the court of Charlemagne. He marched with the armies of the great king against the Lombards and the Bavarians, the Huns and the Saxons, he saw war upon as grand a scale as the world had ever known. Restored to his throne after Queen Edburga, wife of King Offa, accidentally poisoned her husband along with his friend who she meant to kill. The people expelled her from the country. Charlemagne gave Egbert his sword, "Gaudiosa", as a parting gift. He reigned for 36
years, accomplishing that consolidation of authority which justified him in taking the title of King of England. [Knight's Popular History of England, Vol 1, p. 90-3]

Egbert took advantage of the anarchy in Mercia and asserted supremacy which was never lost. The battle of Ellendune (Wilton) -- the great struggle between Egbert and Beornwulf -- was fought in 823. In 827 Northumbria submitted to Egbert. [Knight's ..., Vol 1, p. 94-5]

Descendant of Ine's brother (king, 688-726).

Until 823 the kingdom existed as a separate entity, but in that year Egbert of Wessex granted his alliance to it at the price of its nominal independence. The witan of the East Angles continued to act as the center of local government and military organization. The thing of the South folk may have met at Thingoe -- at Bury, in fact. The ancestry for Raedburh is not at all sure. Some have her as daughter of Charlemagne, which may be true. Others state that she may not have been related to Charlemagne in any way, merely a lady of the court. I have represented her as a sister based on the information below which names her "Regis Francorum Sororia". There is no contemporary source for Egbert's wife. The name "Raedburh" comes from a medieval manuscript quoted by W. G. Searle (Anglo-Saxon Bishops, Kings and Nobles, London 1899, 343) as "MS Trin Coll Oxf x". She is described there as "regis Francorum sororia" which can only be a reference to Charlemagne; however there is no such sister known. Since Egbert was certainly in exile at Charlemagne's court, it is perfectly plausible that he married his wife there. If the tradition has any value, then the best guess is that she was probably a sister-in-law, but she could just as well have been a lady of the Court. Settipani (La prehistoire des Capetiens, 308 n791) is willing to accept the name.

HAMELIN illegitimate son of GEOFFREY V, styled "PLANTAGENET," COUNT OF ANJOU, TOURAINE and MAINE, sometime DUKE OF NORMANDY, by an unknown woman, held lands in Touraine, presumably the gift of his half-brother Henry II, and appears to have been styled vicomte of Touraine. He became EARL OF SURREY in consequence of his marriage to the Countess Isabel in 1164; in which year he attended the Council of Northampton. In 1166 he returned his carta, as holding 60 knights' fees. He supported the King against his rebellious sons in 1173; and in 1176 he was one of the nobles who escorted Henry's daughter Joan for her marriage to the King of Sicily. He was present at the 1st Coronation of Richard I, 3 September 1189. In the King's absence he supported the Chancellor against John; in 1193 he was one of the Treasurers for the King's ransom; and in 1194 he was at the Council of Nottingham. At Richard's 2nd Coronation, 17 April 1194, he bore one of the 3 swords; and he was present at the Coronation of King John, 27 May 1199. He was a benefactor, or confirmed previous gifts, to the abbeys of St. Mary's (York), St. Victor-en-Caux, West Dereham and Foucarmont, the priories of Lewes, Nostell, St. Katherine (Lincoln), Southwark, Thetford and Castle Acre, the Hospitallers, and the chapel of St. Philip and St. James in Conisborough Castle. He married, in 1164 (probably in April), Isabel, widow of William (OF BLOIS) 4th EARL OF SURREY, and only daughter and heir of William (DE WARENNE), 3rd EARL OF SURREY, all above-named. He died 7 May 1202 and was buried in the Chapter House at Lewes. Isabel survived him and made gifts for the soul of her late husband to the priory of St. Katherine, Lincoln, and to Lewes Priory. She was living in April 1203 but died probably soon afterwards, possibly 12 July 1203, and was buried in the Chapter House at Lewes (g). Born: in 651 in Neustrie, son of Clovis II, King de Bourgogne and Sainte Bathilde. Some sources assert that Thierry III was born in 651 while others claim it was circa 654. Note - between 673 and 690: Thierri III became King of Neustrie upon the death of Clotaire III between 10 March and 15 May 673. The Crown was given him by Ebroin, Major Domo. It is Ebroin's excesses which caused the Greats [Optimates] to rebel in 674 and to call upon Childeric II, King of Austrasia for help. Thierri III was de-throned in 674 by Childeric II who died in 675 allowing Thierri III to re-claim the throne. In 674, he was shaven and relegated to Saint-Denis. Ebroin was exiled to the Monastery of Luxeuil [Haute-Saone]. In 676, Thierry III left Saint-Denis to become King of Neustria and of Burgundy with the help of Major Domo Leger. Ebroin, however, first supports Clotaire III, a son of Clovis III, and then he swings to Thierry III.

Thierry III for his part is first and foremost King of Neustria and of Burgundy and the Greats [Optimates] of Austrasia want a King of their own. Thus, they find Dagobert II, son of Sigebert III, who had been exiled in Ireland. For all practical purposes, Dagobert II is King of Austrasia, whereas Ebroin rules Neustria and Burgundy in the name of Thierry III. By 680, through the death in 679 of Dagobert II, Thierry III is sole King of Gaule. But in reality the antagonism between the Neustrians and the Austrasians was quite aggravated. Austrasia is at that time governed by the grandson of Pepin de Landen, Pepin II, who makes himself Duke of Austrasia, supported by his brother Martin. In the Summer of 680, the two armies join in battle at Leucofao [known today as Bois-du-Fay] in the Ardennes. The Austrasians are defeated and Pepin escapes. Martin is taken prisoner in Laon, where he had sought refuge. Ebroin had promised to let him live, and of course, he rushed to have him executed. Within 3 years Ebroin is himself assassinated by one Ermenfroy who takes refuge in Austrasia. In 687, Pepin II with the help of the Greats [Optimates] of Neustria, invades Neustria from the North-East. Though Thierry III was vanquished at the Battle of Tertry [three leagues from Saint-Quentin] by Pepin II, the latter still recognized Thierry III as King of Neustrie. Married before 674: Amalberge, daughter of Wandregisis and Farahild. Died: between March 691 and April 691.

Thierry III died in March or April, and his son Clovis IV succeeds him, though he is barely 9 years of age. Thus, Pepin II [Pepin of Herstal] remains the true ruler.

Carolingian ruler of the Frankish kingdom of Austrasia (in present northeastern France and southwestern Germany). Charles, whose surname means the hammer, was the son of Pepin of Herstal and the grandfather of Charlemagne. Pepin was mayor of the palace under the last kings of the Merovingian dynasty. When he died in 714, Charles, an illegitimate son, was imprisoned by his father's widow, but he escaped in 715 and was proclaimed mayor of the palace by the Austrasians. A war between Austrasia and the Frankish kingdom of Neustria (now part of France) followed, and at the end of it Charles became the undisputed ruler of all the Franks. Although he was engaged in wars against the Alamanni, Bavarians, and Saxons, his greatest achievements were against the Muslims from Spain, who invaded France in 732. Charles defeated them near Poitiers in a great battle in which the Muslim leader, Abd-ar-Rahman, the emir of Spain, was killed. The progress of Islam, which had filled all Christendom with alarm, was thus checked for a time. Charles drove the Muslims out of the Rhone valley in 739, when they had again advanced into France as far as Lyon, leaving them nothing of their possessions north of the Pyrenees beyond the Aude River. Charles died in Quierzy, on the Oise River, leaving the kingdom divided between his two sons, Carloman (circa 715-54) and Pepin the Short.

Note - between 715 and 741: Toward the end of 715, Charles escaped from the prison his step-grandmother had locked him in, and rallies the Austrasians. In March, 716, however, in his first conflict with the Frisons who were edging their way up the Rhine, Charles is routed. A few weeks later, he is able to beat the Neustrians on the Ambeve River, near Malmedy. on 21 March 717, he is victorious over the Neustrians again, this time at Vincy, near Cambrai and he forces Chilperic II and his Mayor of the Palace, Rainfroi to flee to Paris. In 714, Charles takes the title Mayor of the Palace of Neustria, and gives the Neustrians a new King, Clotaire IV, son of Thierry III [who had died in 691] . The same year, his armies ravage Saxe all the way to the Weser River. In early 719, Clotaire IV died, and Rainfroi and Chilperic II obtain the assistance of Eudes, Duke of Aquitaine in a campaign against Charles. Charles defeats both armies; however, since Clotaire IV is dead, Charles recognizes Chilperic, but he becomes the Major Domus of both Neustria and Austrasia. When Chilperic II died in 721, Charles pulled Thierry IV, young adolescent son of Dagobert III, out of the Monastery of Chelles. from 722 to 724, the arabs mount successful offensives and pillage Autun. Charles, worried about maintaining the Franc authority, Charles Martel mounts a frightfully succesful campaign in Bavaria against the Allemanians and the Frisons, and he destroys their temples. Theutbald, Duke of the Allemanians is essentially powerless. In Gaule, toward the end of the decade, Charles turns his attention to Eudes, Duke of Aquitaine, who had maintained too independent an attitude. Aquitaine is ravaged in the process. In 730, Eudes allies himself with an Emir of northern Spain, Othmann ben Abi-Nessa and the arabs agin a foothold in southern France. By 732, a new emir, Adb-el-Rahman invades from Pampelona, cross the Pyrenees near Roncevaux, take and pillage Bordeaux, burning all the churches. In the Summer, they take Poitiers and destroy the basilica of Saint-Hilaire-hors-les-murs. On Saturday 17 October 732, Charles Martel's armies take the great Roman way linking Chatellerault to Poitiers and at 20 km North of Poitiers, at Moussais-la-Bataille, it encounters the arabs. They would observe each other for 7 days before the Battle of Poitiers would take place.

The Battle of Poitiers: One Chronicler, Fredegaire described the action as follows: "Duke Eudes, being viewed with derision throughout his lands, called against Prince Charles and the nation of the Francs, that most perfidious race of the Sarrasins [that is not accurate as Eudes had first allied himself with an Emir, but then called upon Charles for aid when events turned on him] . The Sarrasins, led by their King, Abd-el-Rahman cross Gerona [another error as they set out from Pampelona and crossed the pyrenees at Roncevaux] . After having burned the churches, and crushed the population, they arrive in Poitiers. When they burn the Basilica and destroy the residence of Saint Martin, Prince Charles put into action an audacious plan and the order of Battle is given. With the aid of Jesus Christ, our Lord, our valorous Prince destroys their tents and flies into combat to crush them..."

A less glorious account is given by a monk of the Abbey of Moissac:

"The King of Spain, Abd-el-Rahman, having crossed the Pyrenees with his large army from Pampelona, laid siege to Bordeaux. Then Eudes, Prince of Aquitaine, leading his large assembled army fought against the Sarrasins on the banks of the Garonne. But, from the beginning, the Sarrasins were victorious. Eudes, having to flee, recruited the assistance of Charles, Prince of the Francs. Then Charles led his armies and combat ensued in the suburbs of Poitiers [the actual battle took place 20 km North of Poitiers] . The Sarrasins having been beaten by the Francs, and their King, Abd-el-Rahman killed, fled in a most disorderly manner back to Spain. As to Charles, he returned triumphantly to France with the bounty..."

The Moslems have named that field of Battle: Balad-al-Shouhada -- Place of the Martyrs of the Faith. This victory gave Charles Martel extraordinary prestige, and it is there that he is said to have crushed the arabs "like a hammer". He then occupied the Bourgogne (Burgundy) and pacified the Languedoc, and Provence, thus establishing a significant French Monarchy. He exiled the family of Eucharic of Orleans, who controlled the bishopric of Auxerre, to Hesbaye, and installed his own man, Aimar to the Holy See. Married before 726: Sunnichild de Baviere. Buried: in Oct 741 in Saint Denis, Seine, Ile-de-France, France. Died: on 22 Oct 741 in Kiersy=Quierzy, Aisne, France, Upon Charles Martel's death, his two sons divide the Kingdom in accordance with his wishes. Carloman gets Austrasia, Allemania and Thuringia; Pepin gets Neustria, Burgundy and Provence. The rest, very little, went to Grifon, a bastard child of Charles by Swannhilde, grand-daughter of the Duke of the Bavarians.

Marozia I is daughter of Theophylact and Theodora. Her other two husbands were Guy of Provence and Hugh of Florance (aka King of Italy, King Hugo of Provence; m.932) who were half-brothers. Theodora was also mistress of Adalbert di Tuscano and John of Tossignano (aka Pope John X). Marozia I was also mistress of Pope Sergius III (d. Sep 4, 911); they were parents of Pope John XI (c.910-Mar 1, 935/936). I don't know the parents of any of these people, but I do know the Pope Sergius III is descended from a noble family. Louis III the Blind (son of King Boso of Provence and Ermengarde of Germany) was King of Provence (887-928) and King of Italy (900-905?), so maybe they connect into that family somehow.

When Otto died, Adelaide became regent for her son Otto II, who included her in his decrees, arriving at decisions "with the advice of my pious and dearest mother." After Otto's death she became joint regent with her daughter-in-law, Theophano, for the 3 year old, Otto III, and after Theophano died, Adelaide became sole regent. On his fourteenth birthday, Otto III gently, but firmly, broke lose from his grandmother, and for the rest of her life she lived in a nunnery using the title "Adelheida, by God's gift Empress, by herself a poor sinner and God's maidservant”.
