TENTH GENERATION

TENTH GENERATION

580. John PACE (85)(106) was born in 1735. He died in 1780. According to The Pace Family (Anthony:1976),
"John Pace and his wife Sarah may have come to Edgecombe, North Carolina as early as 1774. It is possible that this John and Sarah were the parents of the Surry County, North Carolina Paces, as given in the family Bible of Alsa Pace.

It is said that John and his son, Richmond, were Tories during the Revolutionary War. There was a large contingent of Tories in Surry and they might have gone where their neighbors were more congenial. While John and his son fought on the Tory or British side, another son, Burwell Pope, fought on the American side. We are quite certain that John Pace and maybe Richmond, were among the fourteen Tories killed at Shallow Ford, N.C.

Before the war, John petitioned the State and was granted a land grant in his oldest son, Richmond's, name. This left a hardship on the family with both John and Richmond gone. It was customary for the State to confiscate real property of those who fought on the Tory side, however, we have not found any records as such concerning John and Richmond Pace except what Burwell has to say in his petition to the state.

Court house records show that at the March 1761 Court, John Pace was among several persons ordered to appear in Court to be fined 20 shillings for failure to appear for Jury Duty on the Petit "unless they show cause". The responsibility of supporting a large family of eight children by primitive methods probably weighed heavier than Civil Duties.

This same record (Anthony, 1976) shows John Pace, child of George Pace III, being born in 1735, but then the record of his family shows him as being born in 1732 and dying in 1780, married 1753 to Sarah Pope. Since George Pace III is shown in this same record as being married in 1732, I am inclined to believe the 1735 date. Eight children are shown for John and Sarah (Pope) Pace in (Anthony, 1976). He was married to Sarah POPE in 1753.

581. Sarah POPE was born in 1741. She died in 1798. Children were:

child i. Richmond PACE(106) was born in 1754. He died in 1780.
child ii. Reuben PACE(106) was born in 1756. He died in 1846.
child iii. Burwell Pope PACE(106) was born in 1758. He died in 1816.
child iv. Rolley PACE(106) was born in 1760.
child v. Salley PACE(106) was born in 1762.
child290 vi. Edmund [Marion] PACE.
child vii. Dempsey PACE(106) was born in 1772.
child viii. Sarah PACE(106) was born in 1788. Birth date as given in (Anthony, 1976) is incompatible with death date of 1780 for father. Perhaps this should read 1778 or 1768?
