ELEVENTH GENERATION


1858. Joseph HUIT/HEWITT (121) died in Dec 1713 in Cape May Court House,Cape May,NJ. Per Burns:
"JOSEPH HUIT/HEWITT d. Dec 1713 CMCH, NJ m. Hester or Esther Hand, dau. Shamgar + Mary (Talmage) Hand. Joseph Hewitt died in the epidemic of 1713-1714".

Burns quotes from Sketch of the Early History of County of Cape May (Maurice Beesley, 1857, reprinted Cape May Co. Magazine of History and Genealogy, Vol 8, No 5, 1985, p 392): "According to Thomas Leaming, an early pioneer, who died in 1723 aged 49, 'in the winter of 1713-1714, the county came near being depopulated by a grievous sickness, which carried off between forty and fifty of the inhabitants. The disease came on with pain in the side, breast, and sometimes in the back, navel, tooth, eye, hand, feet, legs or ear. Amongst the victims were Nicholas Stillwell, Arthur Cresse, Sen. and Jr., Reuben Swain, Richard Smith, Samuel Garretson, Cornelius Hand, Josheph Hewitt, William Shaw, John Reeves, Richard Fortesque, John Stillwell, james Garretson, Return Hand, John Foreman, Jedidiah Hughes, John Matthews, Daniel Wells and over twenty other.' With a population of only two or three hundred, this was a severe epidemic for the county."

1859. Esther/Hester HAND (121). Children were:

child i. Thomas HUIT/HEWITT(121) was born on 31 Aug 1707. He died in Aug 1780 in Cape May Co,NJ. He had an estate probated on 18 Aug 1780 in Cape May Co,NJ. Per Burns, as quoted from Tour of Cape May County, 1988 - Cape May County Historical Society:
"The courts were usually held in private dwellings previous to 1745. But a new court house had now been built and the first court held in it was on the third Tuesday of May 1745 when the following officers and jurors were present: .... Grand Jurors: ........, Thomas Hewitt."

child ii. Mary HUIT/HEWITT(121) was born on 18 Dec 1708.

child iv. Anne/Ann HUIT/HEWITT(121) was born on 10 Oct 1712.
child v. Joseph HUIT/HEWITT Jr.(121) was born on 26 Jan 1714. He died on 25 May 1762. Per Burns, he was born posthumously and was listed as a yeoman in his will.
